PENSACOLA, Fla.- It was another great day for the West Florida Women's Tennis Team as they took down Gulf South Conference opponent, Mississippi College in a close match 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. This improves the Argos to 11-7 overall and 7-1 in the conference. This improves the Argos to 3-0 on this weekend's matches.
After winning three Gulf South Conference matches this weekend, the Argos are steady as the No. 3 seed in the Gulf South Conference with the GSC tournament quickly approaching from April 28-30 in Montgomery, Ala.
From today's matches, West Florida dropped two of the three doubles matches, but the Argos were able to come back in singles to seal the victory over the Choctaws.
Guilanna Sacco and
Mayumi Saguchi dropped their match from the No. 1 position 3-6. The only victory in doubles would come from
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner from the No. 3 position 6-3.
In singles, the Argonauts got the momentum going as they won four out of the six matches.
Yigin, who is currently ranked 74
th in the country in national singles, lost a close match to Ely Alas dropping the first set 4-6, winning the 6-3, and falling in the tiebreaker 3-6 from the No. 1 position. Saguchi also dropped her match from the No. 3 position 5-7, 5-7.
Recuenco secured the first singles point for the Argos from the No. 2 position, winning her match in two sets 6-0, 6-2. This improves her record to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in conference singles.
From the bottom half of the lineup, Silwanowicz won her match 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 4 position to get the next point for the Argos. Wagner won 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 5 position to secure her sixth singles victory.
It all came down to
Luiza Daud to secure the final point for the Argonauts from the No. 6 position. Daud won the first set 7-5, dropped the second 1-6, and was victorious in the third 6-1 to seal the victory for the Argonauts.
After the match, head coach
Derrick Racine said, "The women played a great match today and it was a very important one for our GSC standing. We played good doubles but came up a little short. All the singles were super tight and it was freshman
Luiza Daud who came up with the big 3rd set win to seal the victory."
The Argos will host Auburn Montgomery and Shorter next weekend for more Gulf South Conference play.
