West Florida Splits Doubleheader with Lee

Argos look for series win in regular-season finale on Sunday

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The offense was alive and well in the University of West Florida softball team's doubleheader with Lee on Saturday afternoon, and the Argonauts earned the split. UWF is now 29-13 overall and 20-8 in the Gulf South Conference, with the season finale coming on Sunday at 1 pm ET in Cleveland, Tenn.
 
West Florida totaled 16 runs in the split, getting production from all parts of the lineup. Eight Argonauts had multiple hits, as Madilynne Webb, Kayanna Perez, and Erin Moon each had four. Two of Webb's four hits were home runs, giving her five on the year.
 
Kayla Mayo led the team with four RBIs, and Teala Howard also had a home run. Montana Young earned her 11th win of the year in Game 2, making her and Kelsey Sweatt just the second set of teammates in the GSC with at least 11 wins.
 
West Florida wraps up the regular season with the series finale on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm ET in Cleveland.
 
GAME 1: UWF 8, Lee 9 (8 innings)
Lee got ahead with a three-run home run in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead, but the Argonauts battled back and took leads in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth.
 
Madilynne Webb and Teala Howard each hit solo home runs in the second and third innings, respectively, to cut into the Lady Flames lead. The home runs were Webb's fourth and Howard's third of the season.
 
A Kayla Mayo two-run double in the fifth gave UWF its first lead of the day, scoring Morgan Zettle and Kayanna Perez and putting West Florida ahead 4-3 before Lee evened the score in the bottom of the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.
 
UWF put up a four-spot in the sixth, tallying four hits in the inning. Angela Agurkis brought in Madelyn Vasquez to score the go-ahead run, Zettle singled and scored pinch-runner Chelsea Dumas, and Kayanna Perez's single up the middle scored Zettle and Ayana Powell.
 
Unfortunately for UWF, Lee put four runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh to force the game into extra innings. The Flames' Sidney Lee singled to left in the bottom of the eighth to score the walkoff run and give Lee the win.
 
Kelsey Sweatt got the start for UWF and battled throughout the game. The senior struck out eight over her eight innings of work, but Lee was able to scatter nine hits and nine runs across the game. Sweatt dropped to 13-8 on the year.
 
Five Argonauts had multi-hit games in Game 1 – Erin Moon, Madelyn Vasquez, Madilynne Webb, Morgan Zettle, and Kayanna Perez. Perez had a game-high three hits, and Webb reached three times total after drawing a walk.
 
GAME 2: UWF 8, Lee 2
A pitcher's duel followed in Game 2. Montana Young got the win for UWF in a complete game effort, with eight strikeouts and just one walk allowed.
 
West Florida was the first to strike in Game 2, getting a two-run homer from Brett Leiva in the second inning that scored Madilynne Webb.
 
UWF added to the lead in the third when Kayla Mayo singled up the middle to bring in Teala Howard, who led off the inning with a triple.
 
After Young and Lee starter Alaina Watson traded zeroes, West Florida added three more runs on consecutive RBI singles in the top of the sixth, from Kayanna Perez, Howard, and Mayo.
 
Webb added two more insurance runs in the seventh with a home run – her second of the day and fifth of the year.
 
Lee's Ana Macha had an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to get the score to the final 8-2
 
Young went the full seven innings and improved to 11-2 on the year.
