UWF Opens Postseason Run with GSC Tournament

Argos are 3-seed, will face 6-seed Montevallo on Wednesday

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The postseason begins on Wednesday for the University of West Florida softball team, as the Argonauts kick off the Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament with a 10 a.m. matchup against Montevallo. West Florida (30-13, 21-8 GSC) is the 3-seed, while Montevallo (25-21, 15-13 GSC) is the 6-seed.
 
Like last year, the tournament will take place at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. Tickets for the tournament are $10 per day, available both online and at the Choccolocco Park box office. Parking will be $5 per day.
 
All games for the modified double-elimination tournament will be live streamed on FloSoftball.com. Fans will have to purchase a subscription to FloSports to watch games, and directions to sign up are provided by the GSC at the link above. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time.
 
First pitch for the GSC Softball Tournament is expected to be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
 
ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Argonauts offense stayed sharp at Lee, hitting .409 and slugging .667 with six home runs. Six Argos hit .400 or better, led by Kayanna Perez with six hits and a .545 batting average in 11 at-bats. Teala Howard and Madilynne Webb each had a pair of home runs, and Kayla Mayo hit .333 with a team-best 5 RBIs.
 
UWF won the series with Lee, averaging almost 9 runs per game and sealing the 3-seed in this week's Gulf South Conference Tournament.
 
THE GSC TOURNAMENT
West Florida makes its 25th appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament and its sixth in a row. One of the best performers in the tournament's history, UWF has the third-most wins (48) and the third-most apperances in the finals (7) in league history.
 
The tournament returns to Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama, this season for the third time. The field is made up of the top eight teams in the GSC Softball standings -- UWF finished third in the regular season and is the 3-seed. The winner of the tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. West Florida is 10-8 against the teams in the field this year.
 
FIRST UP: MONTEVALLO
Montevallo is led by one of the top hitters in the country, Sierra Easterwood. She leads the GSC in home runs (18), RBIs (54), slugging (.876), and total bases (134), bolstering a tough Falcons lineup. Hannah Carey, who is hitting .336 with six home runs and Lauren Hamby (.331, two home runs) are a couple of other batters to look out for.
 
The Falcons rank second in the GSC in home runs, doubles, and slugging, and they rank fourth in fielding percentage and 10th in ERA.
 
UWF won the series at Montevallo in early April. Montana Young turned in good work in the circle, throwing to a 2.42 ERA over 8.1 innings, and Erin Moon led the team with a .400 batting average. Kayla Mayo, Ayana Powell, and Jessica Ford each hit a home run in the series, as well.
 
West Florida is 5-2 against the Falcons in the last two seasons and holds an 8-4 record against Montevallo since 2019.
 
WE'VE BEEN PRETTY GOOD LATELY
UWF has been playing some of its best softball in the last two-and-a-half weeks, going 8-2 against Spring Hill, Delta State, Valdosta State, and Lee.
 
The Argonauts have hit .330 and slugged .489 with 10 home runs in those 10 games, while also pitching to a 2.51 ERA and holding a .989 fielding percentage.
 
Teala Howard has led the team with a .432 batting average, Erin Moon has hit .387 with seven walks, Kayanna Perez is hitting .370 with four stolen bases, and Madilynne Webb has hit three home runs with a .692 slugging percentage. Kayla Mayo and Madelyn Vasquez each have a team-best eight RBIs in the last couple of weeks.
 
In the circle, Kelsey Sweatt holds a 2.51 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 39.0 innings, and Montana Young has a 2.25 ERA with 28 strikeouts and just four walks in 28.0 innings. Both have a 4-1 record.
