GSC Spring All-Academic Teams
GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll
 
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Florida athletic department saw 10 Argonauts named to the 2022 Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Teams, announced on Tuesday morning. Additionally, 73 Argos earned spots on the conference academic honor roll, holding a 3.0 cumulative grad point average while participating in at least one contest.
 
UWF's 10 All-Academic honorees were the second-most in the conference and the most among the six sports that UWF competes in.
 
West Florida softball was well-represented, as both Teala Howard and Kelsey Sweatt earned spots on the All-Academic Team.
 
Teala Howard was named an All-American for the third time in her career this season, earning status from the NFCA and the D2CCA. She was also named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and the D2CCA South Region Player of the Year, while leading the conference in batting for the fourth consecutive season. Howard holds a 3.25 GPA in Health Care Administration.
 
Kelsey Sweatt, from Jacksonville, Florida, earned first team All-GSC and second team All-South Region (D2CCA) honors in her final campaign with the blue and green. The senior ranked second in the conference in strikeouts, fourth in innings pitched, and sixth in opponent batting average, and she has earned a 3.85 GPA in Health Promotion.
 
UWF men's tennis saw a conference-best three selections to the all-academic team.
 
Juan Cabrera, the 2022 GSC Player of the Year, was one of those selections. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native is a graduate student with a 3.88 GPA in West Florida's MBA program. Cabrera is a four-time All-GSC pick and this is his fifth all-academic nod, which is the most in the conference.
 
Facundo Bermejo holds a 3.46 GPA in Business Management and went 16-6 as UWF's No. 2 singles player. A first team All-GSC selection and a native of Cordoba, Argentina, Bermejo also went 18-5 as No. 1 doubles and was ranked 17th in the country by the ITA.
 
Tomas Descarrega also earned All-Academic team honors, with a 3.63 GPA in sport management. Like Cabrera and Bermejo, Descarrega was a first team All-GSC pick and hails from Argentina. Descarrega went 11-5 in singles and 16-4 in doubles for UWF this season.
 
UWF women's tennis also had two selections, in Irene Recuenco and Sara Yigin.
 
Irene Recuenco holds a 3.91 GPA in exercise science and is from Valencia, Spain. Recuenco is a two-time first team All-GSC pick, a two-time Spring academic honor roll selection, and this is her second time on the All-Academic team. She went 14-8 in singles this season and 15-7 in doubles.
 
Sara Yigin was a second team All-GSC pick and this is her first All-Academic team honor. The Ulm, Germany, native holds a 3.62 GPA in marine biology and played in UWF's No. 1 spot this season. She went 10-10 in singles and 10-4 in doubles.
 
Elias Haavisto from the men's golf team earned a place on the All-Academic squad, with a 3.76 GPA in general business. Haavisto was the GSC Medalist at this year's conference tournament and is a two-time First Team All-GSC choice. Haavisto also earned a spot on last year's All-Academic team.
 
Women's golf earned two selections, as well.
 
Solange Gomez, a native of Quito, Ecuador, holds a 3.35 GPA in UWF's strategic communication and leadership master's program. Like Haavisto, Gomez was the GSC Medalist at this year's conference tournament and was named a first team All-GSC selection this year.
 
Ronja Taipale earns her third GSC Spring All-Academic team honor, holding a 4.0 GPA in legal studies. Taipale had a 78.1 stroke average this season and is from Espoo, Finland. She also had top-50 finishes in three tournaments this season.
