PENSACOLA, Fla. - In the opening match of the Springhill Suites Invitational the UWF volleyball team grabbed a convincing 3-1 win over Wheeling at the UWF Field House.
Amery Rodgers and Camilia Vazquez each had a career-high 18 kills to lead the UWF attack, which hit .331 and collected 15 blocks.
The first set saw a back and forth to start before the Argos pulled away for a 25-13 win. Leading the way early for the Argos was Rodgers and
Alex Oliver who combined for nine kills.
Set two of the match started off much like set one with a close back and forth before WU took a narrow 12-7 lead. The Argos would rally as they came storming back to tie it 15-15. WU would go on to win set two 27-25 after fighting off several rally attempts from the Argos. The Cardinals' Tylah Yeomans had seven of her 12 kills in the set.
Set three of the match saw the Argos take a commanding 17-7 lead, eventually claiming a 25-16 decision. UWF would go on to win set four 25-20.
Along with Rodger and Vazquez,
Alex Oliver added 17 kills and
Jenna Zydlow finished with 11.
Taylor Vaneekeren had 60 assists and three of the team's seven service aces.
The Argos next match in the Invitational is against Spring Hill at 11:30 a.m.
