Men's Soccer Ends in 0-0 Draw at UWA Due to Weather

The game was called in the 72nd minute

LIVINGSTON, Ala.- The West Florida Men's Soccer Team ended the weekend road trip to Alabama with a 0-0 draw against Gulf South Conference opponent, West Alabama.

The beginning of the first half saw the Argonauts on the defensive front as the Tigers had three shots and two corner kicks in the first ten minutes.

Goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien made his first collegiate save by a shot taken by UWA forward Peter Oyitunji in the 16th minute to keep the score tied at zero. Meckien tallied another save in the 30th minute off a free kick by the Tigers. Defenders Luis Felipe and Keegan Lynch kept the Tigers from good looks at the net.

Sophomore Josiah Fontnot recorded the first two shots for the Argos with one shot high and the other saved by UWA goalkeeper Harry Deveney. Deveney ended the game with two saves.

Late in the first half, heavy rain fell in Livingston, but both teams battled on at Tiger Stadium. In the last ten minutes of the half, the Argos took three corner kicks with two good looks at the net. Unfortunately, UWF was unable to convert off the corner kicks still leaving the game tied at zero heading into halftime.

The Argos were two minutes underway in the second half when the game had to be delayed due to lightning. After thirty minutes of lightning delays, the game was able to resume with back-and-forth action between both teams.

The back end of the Argonaut defense held steady, holding the Tigers to eleven shots. UWA outshot the Argos with a margin of 11-8. Meckien made his presence known with three key saves to keep the Argos in the game.

UWF recorded six corner kicks to UWA five corner kicks. Jack Patching, Tom Preston, Josiah Fontenot, and Finn Werner led the charge for the Argos by having two shots each.

Another lightning delay occurred in the 72nd minute with the game still tied 0-0. Coaches and referees then decided to call the game due to weather conditions.

The Argonauts are now 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. The Tigers are 0-2-3 overall and 0-0-2 with a draw against Spring Hill on Friday and West Florida on Sunday.

Up Next: UWF will be back in action in less than two weeks for more GSC play against Union on Friday, Sept. 23rd and Christian Brothers on Sept. 25th.
