Livingston, Ala. --- The University of West Florida received their second loss of the season to West Alabama in an away matchup to end 1-1 in the first weekend of conference games.
Â
Four fouls were committed in the first ten minutes of play but the following foul coming in the 11
th minute would cost the game as defender
Kendall Blackmon hit an opponent from behind in the box for the Tigers (3-2 overall, 2-0 GSC) to get the lone goal off a penalty kick that was finished by Paige Laidler.
Â
The first half was a battle as the main action between the teams were fouls with possession constantly changing. The teams had to adjust in the rain in the beginning minutes as it was difficult to connect passes due to field conditions.
Â
Hitting at the 63
rd minute mark is when the Argos (3-2-1 overall, 1-1 GSC) felt the pressure and tried to make chances happen but nothing could fall through. Awarded a foul just 15 yards out next to the left sideline,
Blair Cowan took a free kick for a Tiger player to get a head on it to almost score an own goal. As set pieces were the charm for last game against Alabama Huntsville, the corner kicks were unable to turn into goals in this afternoon's match.
Â
In the final ten minutes pressure began to build as time was slowly running out for the Argos. The closest opportunity came in the 81
st minute as
Mya Swinton took a driven shot 20 yards out that bounced off the goalkeeper for
Kileigh Whited to tap in but was just saved by the fingertips of the keeper.
Â
In the 57
th and 84
th minute, Swinton received yellow cards which would convert to a red card to force the Argos to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
Â
The Argos outshot the Tigers 11-5 and earned ten corners compared to the Tigers one. Five of the 11 shots came on goal that were all saved by Tigers goalkeeper Maria Mon to shutout the Argos.
Â
The Argos look to bounce back on their home field as they take on Valdosta State and West Georgia Friday, Sep. 16 and Sunday, Sep. 18
