Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Argos Outplay the Blazers for the Win

Pensacola, Fla. --- The University of West Florida women's soccer team defeated Valdosta State in a close 1-0 win at home to extend their winning record.

In the 19th minute senior Blair Cowan would get her fourth goal on the season as she received the ball just outside the box to then take control and fire a shot with plenty of power to sneak by the goalkeeper. With many Blazers around her, Cowan maintained her ground as she remained calm to earn her first game winning goal in seven played games.

Both teams came out aggressive as soon as the whistle hit as the Argos (4-2-1 overall, 2-1 GSC) and Blazers (1-3-1 overall, 0-2 GSC) were constantly changing possession to keep both offensive and defensive side of each team on their toes. A corner from Ahnalie Layman would occur in the 15th minute to put the Argos in great position on their attacking half where shortly after, the ball from Cowan would find the back of the net.

Layman showed her offensive talent in the outside back position to continuingly keep the Blazers chasing. Manami Okada held down the center midfield as she had four shots and made it difficult for the Blazers to play through the middle.

Defender Destiny Hird led the team with shots on goal as she managed to find two opportunities that would be saved.

"We gave a lot of great energy and we worked really hard," said assistant head coach Dustin Smith. "Every game is important and tonight's game was the most important."

The Argos held the Blazers to five shots, compared to their 16, with two coming on goal that Maciah Lipsey stopped.

Composure would be the way to describe the game as a total of 19 fouls occurred between the teams (12-7 Valdosta vs. Argos) involving a yellow card to the Blazers in the 81st minute. "It's always going to be a tough game against Valdosta. We knew we would have to come out and battle and I'm happy with their performance."

Up next for the Argos will be at the UWF Soccer Complex at 12:30 p.m. to take on West Georgia.
