PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's cross country team placed four finishers in the top 12 at the Argonaut Invitational Presented by Life Cycle Tax and Wealth Management, on their way to a second-place finish on Friday morning.
"It's always good to host a home meet on campus and get some friends and family to come out and watch the race," head coach
Caleb Carmichael said. "We had a better day than we did at North Alabama. We had some continued improvement by young freshmen, and Sophia (Spalding) stepped up for us. It was a good day, and I'm really happy with the girls."
UWF took second in the team's home meet, finishing ahead of conference opponent Auburn Montgomery, UT Southern, and Chipola College. Ouachita Baptist took the team title.
The UWF women's team was once again tightly packed, especially at the top. Freshman
Chloe Rook finished fifth overall with a 20:37.5, and
Sophia Spalding (20:39.2) and
Ava Baldauf (20:41.0) were right behind her in seventh and eighth places.
"Obivously this is a really tough course," Rook said. "So it was tough, but the fact that it's our home meet and we got to host was really great. I thought our team did awesome, and I'm excited to run it again."
Pensacola native
Skylar Grant ran a 21:03.9 to take 12th,
Julia Alvarez Drago ran a 21:22.5 and finished 19th, and
Leah Fenton placed 23rd overall with a 21:52.6.
Sophomore
Julianne Dennison led the next wave of Argonauts with a 23:03.2, followed by freshmen
Kristen Bouington (23:59.7) and
Avery Miller (24:34.6).
Roe Guzzetta and
