Jackson, Tenn. --- Led by
Mya Swinton, the University of West Florida women's soccer team got past Union University in a 1-0 win to rise to the top of the rankings.
The 61
st minute is where Swinton made her mark and turned an earned set piece into a goal. On their eighth corner kick of the evening, a Bulldog player would be the first to have contact the corner from
Ahnalie Layman who headed it right at the feet of Swinton. Swinton used that to her advantage to calmly control the ball and find the small opening in the net.
The Argos (6-2-1 overall, 4-1 GSC) showed their depth early on as the first 22 minutes of play occurred in most of their attacking half and was quickly outshooting the Bulldogs 7-1. In the 19
th minute,
Brianna Pope found herself open on the wing to have time to place a ball perfectly in the box to Layman running in for what should be an easy tap in, but a Bulldog defender came sliding in to prevent a shot and get the Argos out of shooting position.
Â
Coming off the bench,
Mya Swinton made her presence known up top and continuously drilled on the Bulldogs (2-6 overall, 1-4 GSC). Just two minutes into her play, Swinton would rocket a shot in the upper right of the goal to be just saved but be awarded a corner kick. Swinton tried making the most of it as she received the ball and found herself in a 1-on-1 situation with a Bulldog defender. With Swinton winning the battle, she would get another shot off that would be deflected for an additional corner kick. The corner kick move would be repeated but Swinton could not finish as her shot hit off the side netting for the Argos to lose possession.
Â
It would be halfway in to the second half where Swinton's game-winning goal would fall through. This is Swinton's first goal of the season.
Â
For the Argos, this is their third goal off a corner kick in the season and the team continues to lead the conference in corner kicks at 63.
Â
Swinton and
Blair Cowan led the team with seven shots apiece and 11 other Argonaut players finding chances as well to combine for a total of 35 shots compared to Union's three.
Julia Comin took three shots with all three hitting on target and led the forward line playing 85 minutes.
Â
Manami Okada and the defensive line saw all minutes on the field and held the Union to three shots – one in the first half and two in the second to all be saved. Adding three saves to her name,
Maciah Lipsey earned her sixth shutout and kept the Bulldogs scoreless.
Â
Now on a three-game winning streak, the Argos are currently ranked first in the conference with 12 points. #13 Lee University sits just behind at 11. Only allowing three goals all season (two from penalty kicks), the Argos sit proudly alone at the top with .33 opponent goal average.
Â
Up next, the Argos head to Memphis, Tenn. to take on Christian Brothers Sunday, Sep. 25 at 1:00 p.m. on Signaigo Field.
