Seven Different Argos Score to Soar Past Christian Brothers

Dulay, Labovic, Layman Earn First Season Goals

Memphis, Tenn. --- Now on a four-game winning streak, the University of West Florida women's soccer team took care of business in this evening's game against Christian Brothers in a 7-0 take down and officially concludes the weekend as the current one seed in the Gulf South Conference.

The Argos (7-2-1 overall, 5-1 GSC) dominated the Buccaneers (6-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 GSC) on their home field to give them their toughest loss yet.

In the 16th minute, the Argos would get yet another goal in the season off a corner kick. Taken by Ahanlie Layman, who was awarded the second assist, found Kaytlyn Larsen on top of the 18 yard-line to head the ball into a crowd of players that was able to reach Brianna Pope. Facing away from the goal but managing to outjump the Buccaneer opponents, Pope sneakily directed the ball backwards with her head to perfectly find the top corner of the net. This is the earliest the Argos have scored against a conference opponent and the second quickest goal for the season.

Three shots later and in the 28th minute, another goal would fall. Just in front of the half line, Larsen hit a flying pass to Julia Comin in the forward line who brought the ball down with one touch and snuck it past the keeper to increase the lead 2-0.

Entering the second half up 2-0, the Argos did not stop. Just minutes into the half, a long throw in from Comin reached in the box to Blair Cowan to hit a cross along the Buccaneers defense line. Catching the opponents out of defensive shape allowed for an easy tap in by Mya Swinton from the back post.

Swinton, the second Argo to score in back-to-back games this season, also earned an assist in this afternoon's game. With pace on the ball, Swinton beat the defender along the outside of the box to hit a pass, while falling, perfectly to the feet of Layman at the top of the box who sunk it in the net to earn her first goal of the season and make it a 4-0 score.

The Argos kept the ball rolling as they earned two more goals off penalty kicks. The first penalty kick occurred in the 60th minute as a pass from Cowan went through the defense to reach Isabela Labovic. Before any contact occurred on the ball, the Buccaneer goalkeeper came out of her box and slid for Labovic's feet to be awarded a penalty kick. Labovic was able to finish to earn her first career goal. The second penalty kick followed shortly after as Madison Dulay was taken down in the box to earn and hit the penalty kick to make it 6-0 against the Buccaneers, also earn her first career goal.

In the 73rd minute, Cowan was able to add a goal to her name as she found herself open in the middle of the pitch to sink a shot in the top left corner that was untouchable for the keeper.

With a 7-0 score, this created a new margin of victory in history against the Buccaneers. The biggest lead the Argos had over the Buccaneers was twice in the 2009 season winning 6-0 in both games.

The last time the Argos had a goal differential this large was back in 2019 in an 11-0 win against Auburn Montgomery.

Only four shots on goal did not fall in the back of the net to improve on a 0.405 shot on goal percentage. The Argos took 20 shots with 11 shots on goal and held the Buccaneers to two shots.

Cowan continues to lead the Argos with six goals with Pope just behind her at three, followed by Comin at two. Comin's last goal came against Barry (Aug. 26) in the first minute and was the first player to score for the season.

The Argos will head back to home field at the UWF Soccer Complex to take on Auburn Montgomery Friday, Sep. 30 at 5:00 p.m. and Montevallo Sunday, Oct. 2 at 12:30.
