Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second Half Performance Gives UWF 2-1 Victory Over AUM

This marks the Argos third win in conference play

PENSACOLA, Fla.- It was a great game of Division II Men's Soccer at the UWF Soccer Complex on Friday evening as the West Florida Men's Soccer Team grabbed a 2-1 conference win over Auburn Montgomery. The Argos improve to 5-2-2 and 3-0-2 in GSC play while the Warhawks fall to 3-4-2 and 3-2-1 in GSC play.

It was an evenly played match from the beginning with both teams with five shots each in the first half. AUM would get on the board first with a shot and goal by defender Charlie Elliott, who slid the ball past the UWF goalkeeper. The assist was handed to Landon Surratt.

The rest of the half saw great possessions by both teams, but the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.

In the second half was where the Argonauts picked up the momentum. The Argonaut defense with help from defenders Lucas Barankiewicz and Keegan Lynch limited the Warhawks to seven shots and UWF goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien tallied four saves in the game. Meckien has eleven saves on the season with six starts and games played.

The first goal for West Florida would come in the 71st minute as AUM scored an own goal by Elliott for the Argos to tie the score 1-1. Not even four minutes later, midfielder Tom Preston sent a strong shot inside the top left corner of the net from 25 yards outside the box. Preston's goal marked his first of the season and gave the Argos the 2-1 lead.

Both squads have 12 shots each and UWF had five corners while the Warhawks had four. It was a very intense match between these two teams. Forward Kainan Dos Santos led the Argos with four shots and Finn Werner tallied three shots.

Forward Franck Kouentchi recorded four shots for the Warhawks while midfielder Philip Spickenbaum tallied three shots. AUM goalkeeper Alexander Kraus had two saves in the game to hold the Argos to two goals.

Auburn Montgomery tried to maximize their opportunities in the last twenty minutes but could not find the net as the Argonaut defense held steady to earn the 2-1 victory.

Preston and the rest of the West Florida squad will be back at the UWF Soccer Complex for more GSC soccer action on Sunday, October 2. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
