2022 GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A total of nine University of West Florida student-athletes have been named to the 2022 Gulf South Conference Fall All-Academic Teams, the league announced on Friday. Additionally, 113 student-athletes have been named to the conference's Fall Academic Honor Roll for having a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and participating in at least one event.

UWF tied for the second-most All-Academic honorees in the league and was second with the 113 Honor Roll qualifiers.

The GSC announced that the league had 1,148 student-athletes named to the Honor Roll, 692 or which had a 3.5 GPA or better and 174 had a 4.0 GPA, including 10 Argonauts.

Zach Fenton earned All-GSC and All-South Region honors in his sophomore season. The Sykesville, Maryland, native broke UWF's 8K school record three times during the season, and he holds a 3.88 GPA in Information Technology.

Keegan Ancelin earned a spot on the 2022 All-Academic squad for men's soccer after he had a 3.67 GPA cumulative GPA following the fall semester. The Exercise Science major also placed on the CSC Academic All-District Team. As the second-leading scorer on the team, Ancelin recorded seven goals, four assists, 30 points, and 63 shots to be named to the All-GSC Second Team. He registered 911 minutes with 17 games played and 13 starts on the season.Â
The women's soccer national player of the year,
Blair Cowan, has earned a spot in the All-Academic team after leading the program in goals and assists in her two years at UWF. After finishing her final year with 22 goals and 10 assists, Cowan earned her first All-America honor, awarded by D2CCA and the United Soccer Coaches Association. The senior has a 3.76 GPA in Communications and has recently been named CSC Academic All-America Second Team.

Kileigh Whited is achieving her master's degree in Strategic Communication and Leadership and maintains a 4.0 GPA. Whited led the team with 1,978 minutes of playing time in her final year with the UWF women's soccer program. Whited was placed on D2CCA All-South Region Team and All-America Team this season. This is Whited's first All-Academic award after earning GSC Academic Honor Roll plaudits last year.

The football program had three selections on the team.
Steve Dawson spent the last two seasons at UWF where he obtained his MBA in Supply Chain Logistics Management with a 3.76 grade point average. The Wagga Wagga, Australia product set the UWF career record for punting average, posting a 41.62 average on 58 kicks. His 41.45 average in 2022 ranks third, just behind his 41.8 mark in 2021.

Gael Laurent is now a 2-time GSC Academic Honor Roll member after graduating in December with a 3.6 GPA in Healthcare Administration. In 2022, the linebacker from Miami, Florida appeared in all 14 games with nine starts to finish with 27 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks.

Shannon Showers appeared in all 14 games, making 13 starts at safety, where he finished with 66 tackles and two forced fumbles. The graduate student from Fort White, Florida had a 3.4 GPA in Physical Education and Health Performance.

Taylor Vaneekeren produced one of the top setter seasons in UWF history in 2022 as she led the Gulf South Conference & ranked 34th in the country in assists per set with 10.41. She led the UWF offense to a .272 hitting pct., which was seventh in the NCAA and 13.9 kills per set to place the Argos 18th nationally. The Naperville, Illinois standout finished the season with 17 double-doubles and a team-high 40 service aces. She graduated last month with a bachelor's degree in Sport Management and minors in Sports Psychology and Management with a 3.96 GPA.
Jenna Zydlo added to her growing list of accomplishments, joining Vaneekeren as one of six honorees on the women's volleyball Academic All-GSC list. The Basehor, Kansas native has a perfect 4.0 GPA in Anthropology. Her 2022 honors include CSC Academic All-District, AVCA Third Team All-America, D2CCA Second Team All-Region, NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team and First Team All-GSC.
