Argos Make It Rain With 69-62 Victory Over Choctaws

UWF made 12 3-pointers and never trailed in winning its third-consecutive game

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Jared DeHart and Daniel Sofield combined to make nine of UWF's 12 3-point field goals as UWF defeated Mississippi College, 69-62, at the UWF Field House on a rainy Saturday in Northwest Florida.

UWF pulled its record to 10-10 overall while continuing to cause problems for teams across the Gulf South Conference. The Argonauts won their third-consecutive game as they improved to 6-10 in the league.

"We have started to shoot the ball better from the outside the past four or five games," UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer said. "Daniel had a great shooting night and Jared shot it well and when you get two or three guys shooting it well, it's hard to play zone against us."

But for all of the good shooting, it was the ball possession and only eight turnovers that impressed the Argo head coach the most.

"We did a good job of keeping our poise. They started pressing and trapping a bit and we handled it, and had just a great effort all game."

Sofield finished with 24 points, making four 3-pointers and 8-of-9 at the foul line, while DeHart had a season-high 18 on 5-of-6 shooting from outside, matching his second-most in a game dating back to his four seasons at Bethel (Indiana) University.

The duo scored UWF's first 16 points as the Argos built a 16-8 lead in the opening six minutes. The teams traded scores over the next 10 minutes before they each hit a triple before Jejuan Weatherspoon made a basket to help UWF end the half on a 8-2 run, claiming a 32-23 advantage at the break.

UWF extended the lead to 16 points with 13 minutes to play. MC battled back to within six in the final minute but Sofield made three free throws to clinch the win.

UWF shot 48 percent overall and was 12-of-24 from outside while playing the physical Choctaws to just about even on the boards, 31-30.

LaTrell Tate had all eight of his scoring in the second half before finishing with six assists and five rebounds.

Miles Miller led MC (10-9, 4-9) with a near triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Galen Smith had 14 points and eight boards.

UWF will continue its homestand on Wednesday when it welcomes the first-place team in the GSC, West Georgia (13-4, 12-3) to Pensacola. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Wolves and Argos have the two longest active winning streaks in the conference at six and three games, respectively.
