MOBILE, Ala. –
Brooke Kane scored 18 points in the second half to lead the UWF women's basketball team to a 71-59 win over Spring Hill at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Wednesday.
Kane missed her first six shots in the opening 20 minutes before coming out and making 5-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the free throw line in the second half as UWF outscored SHC 41-32 after the intermission.
UWF (2-1) shot 40 percent in the game but connected at a 45 percent clip in the second half. The Argonauts made it rain inside with eight 3-pointers and outrebounded the Badgers 39-30.
"At halftime I challenged the team to be tougher on offense," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We needed to execute and hunt for opportunities and take those open opportunities. I thought we passed up some open shots in the first half.
Delaney Trushel made four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points and
Tyashia Bostick scored 12 points with nine rebounds. It was her first game back at SHC after coming to UWF as a graduate transfer in the summer.
"I was proud of the way we came out in the third quarter and the way we hit our free throws down the stretch."
SHC (0-1) was led by Kellyn Hunter with 17 points.
The Argos were trailing 7-4 midway through the first quarter before Trushel highlighted a 8-0 run.
Jaden Langford made a layup before Trushel hit back-to-back triples to put UWF ahead 12-7.
UWF held a 15-13 lead entering the second period when SHC scored the first seven points to grab a 20-15 edge. The Argos didn't score for the first 4:30 of the frame but got hot with six-consecutive to regain the lead, 21-20. The teams traded buckets the rest of the half before Trushel drained a 25-footer as time expired to send UWF into the locker room with a 30-27 advantage.
The Argos scored the first 11 points in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 41-27. SHC got within seven in the final minute before UWF made 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
The same two teams will meet in six days at the UWF Field House in Pensacola, Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
