PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team made a school-record 20 3-pointers and shot 62 percent from the floor in a 111-45 win over Spring Hill at the UWF Field House on Tuesday.
UWF (3-1) scored at least 25 points in each quarter and finished with 33 assists – also a single-game record – on 38 baskets. The 111 points are tied for the second-highest in program history.
"We got hot and stayed hot," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "I thought we played a great first half and the challenge was to play better in the second half. I thought we came out and played well. We were able to get deep into our bench and we got contributions from the entire roster."
All 13 players who dressed scored and six finished in double figures.
Brooke Kane had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Argonauts, while adding four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
Shania Johnson and
Tyashia Bostick each made four 3-pointers on their way to 16 and 14 points, respectively.
No player had more than 21 minutes of playing time and 11 had at least one assist.
The Argos finished with 26 fast break points, 26 points off turnovers and 30 points in the paint.
"When you beat a school record of 3-pointers and assists and come close to the scoring record, that's good team basketball," Yelton added.
The 20 triples are tied for the fifth-most in Gulf South Conference history and the assist total is tied for 11th all-time in the league. The Argos connected on 71 percent from outside - 20-of-28 - including 13-of-16 in the second half.
The win was number 249 for Yelton as a head coach. She is currently 249-206 in her 17th season, which includes 193-122 in her 12th at UWF.
UWF will open GSC play this weekend with a trip to Shorter and Lee. Saturday's game against the Hawks will tip-off at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
