Late Surge Propels Argos Over Statesmen

UWF scores 42 points in final nine minutes of contest

PENSACOLA, Fla. – All five starters scored in double figures as the UWF Men's Basketball earned their first Gulf South Conference win over Delta State, 93-84, on Sunday afternoon inside the UWF Field House.
 
With the win, West Florida improves to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in GSC action while DSU drops to 5-2 and 3-1 in league play.
 
Xavier Washington led the Argos with 14 points and nine rebounds while Tautvydas Kupstas, Le'Tarion White and Channick Nkoma added 12 points.  Point guard, Sterling White III, registered a season-high nine assists to go along with 12 points.
 
"I'm extremely happy for our guys", said UWF Head Coach Justin Mann.  "They continue to come in and work hard each day and they deserve this win.  Tonight, the ball went our way and our guys stuck to the game plan and did a phenomenal job executing."
 
UWF shot a season-high 54 percent from the field as to go along with an 83 percent mark from the charity stripe (26-31).  The Argonauts also made 50 percent of their three-point attempts.
 
West Florida got off to a good start by building leads of 19-7 and later 32-17 at the 8:54 mark of the first half.  DSU would finish the half on a 27-13 run as the teams would go to the break with the Argos up a point, 45-44.
 
The Statesmen would grab their first lead of the night on a jumper by Keithan Brooks to go ahead, 48-47, with DSU eventually extending the lead to as many as seven at 66-59, with 9:33 remaining in regulation. Eight of his season-high 11 points, including two three-pointers, from Keith Hoffman, ignited a 16-7 run for the Argos over the next 5:22 to give UWF a 75-74 advantage.
 
UWF would go up six on two different possessions over the next two minutes of gameplay before a three from Kolby Horace cut the lead to three with 1:45 to play.  The Argonauts would not be fazed as the hosts then went on an 9-0 run, with all nine points being scored at the free throw line courtesy of Washington, Kupstas and White III to put the game away.  Washington again got to the charity stripe at will, going 10-11 at the free-throw line.
 
"We had some guys really step up in big moments", continued Mann.  "It was an all-around team effort and I am blessed to lead this group every single day.  Go Argos!"
 
Brooks led DSU with a game-high 27 points while Maalik Cartwright added 20 points and team-high nine rebounds as the visitors' shot 45 percent from the field.
 
West Florida will be back in action next Sunday as they host West Georgia.  Tip-off from the UWF Field House is set for 4 pm.
