UWF Sweeps No. 10 Rollins in Home Opener

Last time the Argos swept the Tars was in 2018

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- After facing two-day weather cancellations, the University of West Florida baseball team was able to host their home opener Sunday afternoon against No. 10 Rollins in a revised two-game series. The doubleheader sweep gave the Argos their fourth win in a row and the first series sweep against the Tars since 2018.

Trent Jeffcoat and Darrien McDowell led the team with three hits as McDowell had a solo home-run in each game along with two RBI. 3B Preston Moore tallied two hits and three RBI.

In game one, UWF has six runs on seven hits in a 6-3 win over Rollins. Pitcher Dalton Neuschwander started in game one did not give up a hit in the first three innings and again in the seventh to earn his first win of the season. He had six total strikeouts and ended his final inning with three straight K's in the seventh frame.

The first three frames went scoreless – it wasn't until the fourth inning that each team got a hit and a run. With a Rollins runner on second and two outs, the Tars got on the board first off a UWF error who made it to home for an unearned run. The Argos responded quick in the bottom of the fourth and loaded the bases off a Jeffcoat single, a Jacob Bailey double, and a Jadon Fryman advance off a hit by pitch. Josh Prizina took a hit that sent Jeffcoat home but would later cost him and take him out of play the rest of the day. With two outs now on the board, Moore earned his two RBI as he hit a double to left field and sent Bailey and Fryman in to score and find themselves in a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth, Neushwander only allowed two hits but a run to keep the Tars and UWF in a one-run difference score entering the bottom of the fifth. Back in the top of the order, Jackson Grabsky quickly doubled followed by a Jeffcoat double who earned his first RBI of the season after sending Grabsky home. A Tars miscommunication was an advantage for UWF and put the Argos in good place for another run. Bailey's single to shortstop was luckily able to get him to first and Jeffcoat to third before Jeffcoat got his second run of the game off a Fryman sacrifice bunt.

Entering the bottom eighth inning with 5-2 lead, the Argos got their final run of the game by a McDowell solo homer, his first homerun in a UWF jersey. Reliever Chase Wilkerson gave the Tars no chance as he threw three straight strikeouts and sent the Tars back on the field. The Tars scored one run in the ninth but was not enough as Wilkerson ended the game with his fifth strikeout to earn the save.

Kade Mandershied got the start in game two and left the field after 5.1 innings pitched with a 4-3 lead. He also had a no hitter through the first four innings.

UWF wasted no time getting multiple runs the board. UWF found themselves in good position after a Fryman single, McDowell double, a sacrifice fly by DH Mark Townsend to advance Fryman to home. Moore came in clutch to gain another RBI off a single to right field. The runs did not stop as redshirt freshman Zach Stokes got his first run of the day to get on base followed by a Grabsky single to send Moore home who ended with two hits and a run on the day.

McDowell earned his second homerun of the day in the fourth to give UWF a 4-0 lead in the third frame.

The Tars got their first hit of the game in the fifth, but they scored two runs on three hits to decrease the UWF lead. The Argos went scoreless the fifth through seventh innings but the Tars scored two runs in the fifth, and one run each in the sixth and seventh and now force extra innings in a 4-4 tie.

Jeffcoat began the hitting in the bottom half of the eighth and hit a single followed by a steal to put himself at second base. Fryman hit a walk-off single to send Jeffcoat home and take the win 5-4.

Chase Stanhope made his appearance partway through the seventh inning and had three strikeouts in 1.2 IP to earn the win.

The Argos will quickly bounce back on Tuesday at Jim Spooner Field and host Spring Hill at 5 p.m. in a single game.
