PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 22 ranked West Florida women's tennis team looks to start Gulf South Conference play over the weekend with a match on Friday, Feb. 17 at Shorter and Saturday, Feb. 18 at Lee. The road match on Friday will be at 10:00 a.m. (EST) and Saturday will be at 10:00 a.m. (EST).
Friday's contest will be at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex with Saturday's contest at the DeVos Tennis Center.
ABOUT UWF
A little over a week ago, the Argonauts played a match against Division I team South Alabama, UWF fell 6-1 to the Jaguars. Newcomer
Guadalupe Martinez won her match from the No. 3 position in a tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6, 10-8.
With three straight GSC matches coming up, West Florida enters GSC play as the No. 22 ranked team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking. Last season, UWF ranked No. 3 in the GSC standings and had an 8-2 conference record. The Argonauts closed out the 2022 season with a loss in the GSC semifinals to Auburn Montgomery in a tight 4-3 battle.
ABOUT SHORTER
The Hawks are 0-2 to start the 2023 spring season with two GSC matches already played against Christian Brothers (6-1) and Lee (7-0). Shorter went 0-10 in the conference last season with an overall 3-10 record. Juan Pablo Selle is the head coach of the Shorter men's and women's tennis teams.
UWF vs. Shorter History
In their last match, the Argonauts swept the Hawks 7-0 with strong performances in doubles as well as throughout the singles lineup. UWF is on an eight-match win streak against Shorter as they prepare to set foot on the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex on Friday morning.
ABOUT LEE
To start the 2023 campaign, the Lady Flames are undefeated with a 3-0 record. Lee took down Shorter 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon, winning from every position in singles and doubles. Sophomore Ashleigh Simes has been a force for the Lady Flames with a 3-0 singles record from the No. 1 position. Simes and her partner Matina Ujdur lead in doubles as the No. 1 pair with a 2-0 record. Overall, the Lady Flames are 15-3 in singles and perfect 7-0 in doubles.
Patric Hynes is in his ninth season as head coach of the Flames men's and women's tennis programs.
UWF vs. LEE History
West Florida won the match 6-1 with victories from five out of six singles positions and the Argos won the lone point in doubles.
Sara Yigin swept her match in two sets 6-2, 6-0 from the No. 2 position. Yigin and
Mayumi Saguchi teamed up as the No. 2 pair to win 6-3. The Argos had a dominating performance to take down the Lady Flames for their ninth-straight match win.
