UWF Splits Doubleheader with Florida Tech

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team concluded their three-game series at Jim Spooner Field Saturday afternoon and took a 2-1 series win over the Florida Tech Panthers.

UWF fell short 2-0 after a ninth-inning two-run homer but fought back in the final game and got their third series win of the season after a 9-0 defeat over the Panthers.

Chase Stanhope entered to pitch in the ninth frame for starting pitcher Kade Mandersheid. In 8.0 IP, Mandersheid allowed only four hits, walked one batter, and had four strikeouts to keep the Panthers scoreless as they entered the final inning. Manderscheid completed four innings with no hits. Stanhope allowed two hits but those hits came back to haunt UWF as they resulted in game-winning runs to give the Argos their second loss of the season.

In the top of the ninth with one out on the board, Panthers infielder Brett Parrish hit a double to right center, his first of the game. Stanhope followed by earning his first strikeout to try to give UWF momentum but it was not enough. It would be followed by a Roman Samson homerun that would later secure the Panthers the win. Stanhope ended the inning with his second and last strikeout of the game.

Zack Stokes had the only hit in the bottom of the ninth off a single down the middle but was not able to do any further damage.

Stokes and Moore led with two hits apiece and Jadon Fryman tallied for one.

Heading into game two, UWF used the loss towards their advantage and put it on the Panthers early. The Argos scored five runs off five hits and never lost the lead. Fryman earned the first hit of the game off a double and was advanced to third by a McDowell single, who later himself stole to second. Bases would soon be loaded as losing pitcher for the Panthers, Dylan Cleveland, walked Moore. In his first at bat of the day, Mark Townsend shot it through the middle to send Fryman and McDowell in to score. Mike Scordo and Jacob Bailey followed with hits themselves to send three more runs in.

In the third, UWF scored two more runs to increase the lead to 7-0. Townsend advanced on base off a walk and Scordo made his way on base again to have UWF runners on first and third. Following Scordo's hit, Townsend scored his second run of the game by a Jacob Bailey sacrifice bunt and the redshirt freshman Stokes got his first RBI of the game off a single to right field to send Scordo in.

UWF did not let up and repeated a two-run inning in the fourth frame. Moore and McDowell scored the runs thanks to a Townsend double. Moore made it on base on a hit by pitch and McDowell was walked.

Starting pitcher Major Posey was awarded a win after 6.0 IP and had a no-hitter through the first four frames. Posey finished with five strikeout and allowed just three hits that came in the fifth and six inning.

Up next, the Argos head to Jackson, Tenn. for a conference matchup. They will take on Union in a three-game series that will begin Friday, Feb. 24 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
