Women's Tennis Hits the Road for Three Matches

The Argos will head to Tennessee and Mississippi

PENSACOLA, Fla.- After splitting last weekend in Gulf South Conference play, the West Florida women's tennis team will have a busy weekend with three road matches. Action will begin on Friday with a match against GSC opponent, Christian Brothers at 12 p.m. The Argos will face Harding at 10 a.m. on Saturday with another GSC match to wrap up the weekend against Delta State on Sunday at 10 a.m.

ABOUT UWF
To start the 2023 campaign, the Argos are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. West Florida sits as the No. 4 team in the GSC standings. The Argos swept Shorter 7-0 over the weekend but came up short 4-3 to Lee on Saturday. Newcomer Guadalupe Martinez leads the Argos with a 2-0 start to the season in singles from the No. 3 and No. 4 position. Aline Midori Da Silva defeated her opponent from Lee 7-5, 6-3 from the No. 3 position on Saturday. Midori Da Silva and her teammate Carlota Verdu dominated their doubles match 6-1 as the No. 1 pair on Saturday.

ABOUT CBU
The Buccaneers have started their season off on the right foot as they are undefeated 6-0 before entering this match against the Argos. CBU leads the conference standings with a 2-0 record in conference play with wins over Shorter and West Georgia. Ellie Hire and Chelsea Dzenga lead doubles play for the Bucs with their most recent win coming against Spring Hill 6-2 from the No. 1 position. Beatriz Costa won her match in two sets 6-1, 6-0 from the No. 1 position for CBU. MJ Garnett is in his eighth year at the helm of the CBU men's and women's tennis programs.

UWF vs. CBU History
In the GSC quarterfinals last season, West Florida defeated the Bucs 4-0 to advance to the semifinals against the No. 2 seed Auburn Montgomery.  The Argonauts are on a fifteen match win-streak over Christian Brothers. The match is slated for 12:00 p.m. at the Southaven Tennis Center.

ABOUT HARDING
The Lady Bisons are 3-8 in the season with wins against Hendrix, Emporia St., and Texas-Dallas. Karli Roux added another win to her singles record against Mississippi College. The freshman from Cape Town, South Africa won in a tight third-set tiebreaker 6-2, 5-7, 11-9. Jing Jing Yang and Lina Romero won their doubles match 6-2 as the No. 2 pair for the Lady Bisons.

UWF vs. Harding History
This is only the third time these two teams have met up, with the first match being in 2007. UWF holds a two match win-streak over the Lady Bisons with the latest 5-1 win coming in 2011.

ABOUT DSU
The Lady Statesmen will begin GSC play this weekend with their first match on Feb. 25 against West Georgia followed by West Florida on Feb. 26. To kick off the 2023 campaign, DSU is 0-2 with losses to Henderson State and Southern Arkansas in their season opener.

UWF vs. DSU History
Last season, the Argos clinched a 6-1 win over the Lady Statesmen. West Florida won the lone doubles point, winning from all three positions. The Argonauts won five out of the six singles matches with former Argonaut Irene Recuenco securing her fourth straight win in singles.
