UWF Downs UWA To Ride 6-Game Win Streak Into GSC Tournament

The Argonauts tied for third in the final regular-season standings

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Jaden Langford had 12 points in the second half to lead the UWF women's basketball team to a 67-57 win over West Alabama at Pruitt Gymnasium on Saturday.

UWF (21-6, 20-4 Gulf South) shot 42 percent from the floor and made 15-of-21 at the free throw line to sweep the season series with UWA.

Langford finished with a game-high 16 points and on 6-of-9 shooting with six rebounds and five assists. Moriah Taylor made three 3-pointers on her way to 15 points.

UWF struggled to get going offensively in the first half, shooting 28 percent and getting just nine of their 23 points from the starters. Taylor and Shania Johnson each made two 3-pointers as UWF found itself trailing 16-12 after 10 minutes. The Tigers stretched their lead to eight late in the second before the Argos ended the period on a 7-2 run, trimming the deficit to 26-23.

The third quarter was very physical as the teams combined for 13 fouls and went to the free throw line 18 times. But the Argos gained control in the final three minutes, outscoring the Tigers 9-3 to take a 41-38 lead.

UWF got a running layup from Johnson and a 3-pointer from Claire Sutherland-Case to grow the lead to 46-41. Sutherland-Case answered a Tiger bucket with another triple from the top of the key before Langford got her own 3-point play. Taylor hit a deep three from the top of the arc to extend the lead to 55-49 with 4:05 to play. The Argos made 7-of-10 free throws in the final minutes to help secure the victory.

UWF will open GSC Championship Tournament play on Tuesday as the No. 3 seed against No. 6 seed West Georgia (13-14, 11-13) in the quarterfinal round of the tourney. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is at 6 p.m.
