PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team (11-6 overall, 3-3 GSC) took the series win over Delta State after splitting doubleheader. The Argos grabbed the first game 3-1 and took a 4-2 loss in game two.

Game 1: UWF 3, Delta State 1
UWF got on the board first in the second inning.
Zack Stokes hit a single to left field. He then advanced to second base off a passed ball. Catcher
Mike Scordo sent Stokes home with an RBI single to outfield.

The Argos capped the scoring in the seventh inning. Bases were loaded with
Trent Jeffcoat,
Darrien McDowell and
Jadon Fryman. Jeffcoat and McDowell advanced to base on singles. Fryman advanced on a fielder's choice. Jeffcoat and McDowell were driven in by
Preston Moore for a two RBI single to stretch the lead 3-0.

The Statesmen (6-10 overall, 2-4 GSC) hit a two-out single to score one run on the game in the top of the ninth.

"Pitching and defense was at a premium today," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat.

Kade Manderscheid threw a single game high seven strikeouts on 8.2 innings pitched. He allowed just one run on five hits.

For the third game in a row,
Chase Wilkerson finished on the mound for the Argos and earned his fourth save.
Â
McDowell and Stokes hit 2-4 to lead the team.

Game 2: UWF 2, Delta State 4
The tables turned in game two. The Statesmen started the scoring in the fourth inning. They scored four runs on four hits. Three consecutive singles were knocked that allowed a run in. Delta State followed with a three-run homer to take a 4-0 lead.

Tyler Dowdy answered with a two RBI homerun in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score 4-2. That was his second homer of the season.

The Argos held Delta State to no hits through the final three innings but was unable to score themselves.

Moore went 2-3 and tallied a run. Three other Argos earned a hit throughout the game.

"A lot of ball left and we're doing some pretty good things," said Jeffcoat. "If we keep hanging our hat on the pitching and defense, the offensive will come around."

The Argos look to get back on the road to take on Alabama Huntsville this upcoming weekend for conference play. The teams will face each other in a three-game series on Friday, March 10 at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
