Five Divers Advance to NCAA Diving Championships

This is the most in program history

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The No. 9 West Florida Swimming and Diving Team made quite a splash on the first day of competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.

It was a record-breaking day for the UWF divers with all five divers advancing to the championships.

Prior to this year, West Florida had three divers advance to the NCAA Diving Championships in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Jade Fontenelle, Daniela Reyes, and Michelle Mejia automatically qualified in the top-ten on the 1-meter boards. Fontenelle came in sixth with a score of 242.90, Reyes finished eighth with 241.00 points, and Mejia rounded out the ninth spot with a score of 237.50.

Adriana Mieses-Sanchez and Olivia Nelson finished seventeenth (221.70) and eighteenth (221.40), respectively and will be competing in nationals.

On the 3-meter boards, Nelson placed eighth with a score of 261.50 while Reyes came in tenth (251.70). Mejia qualified and finished twelfth with 244.35.

'I'm very proud of our athletes today. They pushed themselves to achieve their goal of being in the championship together. This qualification meet is considered to be harder than the meet itself since they are required to compete on both boards in one day. We can focus on one event at a time and really show our skills. This is going to be fun," commented head diving coach Barbara Parker.

The Argos finished thirteenth in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:29.98 compiled of Brooke Dorr, Nina Imboden, Sofia Kendzior, and Kathryn Mipro. This is the first time the Argos have made the NCAA's in the 800 free relay in five years and third fastest time in program history.

Competition on Wednesday will feature the 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving, 1000 free, and 200 medley relay. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m. (EST) followed by finals at 6 p.m. (EST).
