Prizina’s Walk-Off Double Secures Series Sweep over UWA

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team took Saturday's twin bill over West Alabama in the final regular season series at home. The sweep extended their winning streak to 13 games.

UWF took game one, 15-4, that ended in a seven-inning run rule victory, followed by walk-off game winning hit to take game two, 4-3.

The Argos hit a combined 20 hits. Darrien McDowell led with four hits. He landed on base in every at bat in game two.

UWF managed to score runs in every inning of game one, but they had to work their way up from a 2-0 deficit. It only took one hit in the first inning to take the lead. Mike Scordo rocketed a grand slam into left field to quickly get four runs on the board.

The team loaded the bases in the second frame and scored off a walk, followed by scoring on the throw after a foul ball was caught.

Already at a 6-2 lead, the Argos rallied two more runs in the third inning that included an RBI triple by Trent Jeffcoat.

The homeruns kept coming as Preston Moore sailed a solo homerun in the fourth inning for his second RBI of the game.

The Argos continued with adding four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth. True Fontenot, Jeffcoat, McDowell and Moore each got an RBI for the inning.

West Alabama shorten the gap 13-4 in the sixth off a two RBI double. McDowell responded with an RBI single that extended the lead back to 11 runs.

Dilan Lawson finished on the mound for his first appearance of the season and went three up, three down in the top of the seventh to allow the Argos to get the win. Major Posey improved to 7-2 in 5.1 innings pitched. He finished with four strikeouts in 24 batters faced.

Game two had a similar start with West Alabama taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Argos were held to two hits and left four runners on base in the first five innings. Before the Argos to get a run in, the Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth.

The Argos got on board in the sixth inning. Jackson Grabsky hit an RBI single that drove McDowell in. Making his first appearance of the weekend to pinch hit, Tyler Dowdy hit a tying-game double that was inches shy of the foul line.

Now 3-3, entering the bottom half of the seventh, UWF was only one run away from taking the win. McDowell led off with a single and wasn't able to advance in the next two at bats. Josh Prizina stepped up to the plate with two outs on the board. On a 2-1 count, Prizina shot one out to the right center that allowed McDowell to run the bases and score the game winning run.

Salvatore Ferro got the win and improves to 3-2 on the season.

The walk-off double gave UWF their 10th series win of the season.

The Argos will look to continue the streak at Valdosta State April 28 and 29. The series will be the final regular season contests.
