PENSACOLA, Fla. - No. 17 UWF came back after dropping the first set to finish the Walk-On's UWF Invitational undefeated with a gritty 3-1 victory over No. 23 Lewis at UWF Field House, exacting revenge on the Flyers after dropping their final game of the 2022 event to the side from Romeoville, Ill., also by a 3-1 margin.
In a contest that resulted in a quite even stat sheet, the biggest margin of victory in a set was only six points and none of the others were by more than three. With just three more attacks than Lewis, the home team forced the latter into nine more errors to win the offensive battle .139 to .082. The Argonauts also held three Flyers to negative hitting percentages.
Lewis came from behind after trailing 6-1 via a pair of 6-1 runs of their own to claim the first set 25-22. UWF then trailed 3-0 to open the second before another 6-1 span thanks to kills from
Avery Rodgers,
Jenna Zydlo,
Jacque Martin and
Bailee Sterling along with an error and an ace by Zydlo. The teams traded points before four straight UWF points from a pair of Sterling kills and two errors gave the Argos set point. Lewis proceeded to get the four points back to get within two before a kill by
Annie Monaco induced a block error to tuck away the frame 25-22.
From there, the Argos kicked off their third set with gusto, scoring the first nine points via two Rodgers kills, a solo block by Rodgers and another split between Sterling and Monaco, a couple of errors and three aces by
Gabi Moulton. From there, the team bent but never broke, answering every Lewis charge, including scoring the last three points of the period with a Zydlo kill and two more errors to win the set 25-19.
The trend of trading points and runs and UWF answers to moves by the visitors continued into the fourth frame. Some anxious moments arose for the hosts as the Flyers, trailing 12-9, managed to tie the game at both 12 and 17 and claim a 15-14 lead, yet still managed to keep upset-hungry Lewis at bay. A pair of miscues on attacks by Bella Ray of Lewis gave the Argonauts a 23-20 lead, and
Jacque Martin then scratched a point back for her third kill of the frame to get her team to match point. A pair of errors briefly brought momentum back to the visitors' bench by narrowing it to 24-23, but Rodgers promptly called game with the match-winning kill for the third time this season, after doing the same against Oklahoma Baptist and Flagler so far in 2023.
Zydlo led the way for the offense once again with 11 kills on a .308 hitting day and 14 total points to go with four block assists and five digs. The middle from Basehor, Kansas, finishes the tournament with 33 kills, 40.5 points, a .406 offensive percentage and nine assisted blocks to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Joining her on the team is Rodgers, who tallied nine kills on the day to add to her weekend totals of 29 kills, a .334 percentage and 32.5 points.
With 25 kills, 10 against Lewis, a .323 output and 31.5 points for her part, Sterling just missed a spot on the team. She and Monaco each assisted on five blocks.
Meg Brackhan put up 24 digs, and Moulton put forth a huge performance with 31 assists and 15 digs.
With the 3-0 weekend sweep, the Argos up their record to 6-4 entering Gulf South Conference Play. They travel to Livingston, Ala., to face off against West Alabama on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
