UWF Opens GSC Play with Sweep of West Alabama

No. 13 Argos Return Home for Friday Night Match vs. AUM

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - UWF kicked off its conference slate right with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) victory over West Alabama at Pruitt Hall. The Argos (7-4, 1-0 GSC) took care of business against the Tigers (2-9, 0-1 GSC) despite a lower hitting percentage in the first set and totaling less kills and assists throughout the contest. UWF had the advantage in every other category, and took advantage of 23 Tiger errors, including eight apiece in the first and last sets, compared to just 16 of its own.

The hosts came out swinging against the heavily favored Argonauts, scoring the first two points of the contest and later stringing together a 5-0 run, including two aces by Desiree Blount of UWA, to take a 9-6 lead. UWF rallied and both sides volleyed leads and scores for a while until the visitors scored six of the last seven points to claim the frame. Of the last 16 points scored between the teams, 13 came via errors. Aces from Gabi Moulton and Jenna Zydlo were the only UWF points not scored via error of its last 15.

After UWA tied the second set 3-3, the Argos rattled off the next six with Meg Brackhan behind the service line and held off the opposition the rest of the way. The points came thanks to three errors, two resulting from blocks by Avery Rodgers, and kills by Rodgers, Zydlo and Jacque Martin. Zydlo, Rodgers, Damyah Joyner, Annie Monaco and Bailee Sterling assisted each other on three more blocks. Monaco, Izabelle Sanchez and Yomaris Rodriguez each scored aces in the period.

The final set was the same song, third verse. The sequence that put it out of reach came while Sanchez was serving, which consisted of an error and kills from Rodgers, Zydlo and Martin and extended the UWF lead to 15-9. Six of the last 10 West Florida points were West Alabama miscues, and the others were scored via the kill by Zydlo, Caiden Largent and Lily Sumner.

Rodgers and Zydlo were the highest producers on the team, with nine points on .563 hitting and seven kills on .429, respectively, as the two combined for just one error. Monaco and Brackhan each scooped 10 attacks, and Moulton had nine on top of 19 of her team's 28 assists.

The Argos return home for their next game, which will be the team's annual Blackout Match. The squad takes on Auburn Montgomery on Friday night at 5 p.m.
