Argos Flex Muscle in 3-1 Win over Union

Decisive Final Set Puts Match to Bed for UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida (10-4, 4-0 GSC) came out on top in two of three hard-fought sets and ran away with it in the fourth to up its winning streak to seven games and defeat Union (3-13, 2-2 GSC) 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 25-9) at UWF Field House tonight.

The Lady Bulldogs started out fast, playing above their record by scoring the first three points before UWF got on the board. The teams traded scores and the lead for most of the period until the Argos, trailing 16-14, rattled off a 7-0 run to take control. In the scoring span, Annie Monaco and Avery Rodgers fired a kill each, Monaco and Jenna Zydlo split a block, Meg Brackhan hit two service aces and the team took advantage of two ball handling errors. A pair of service errors provided the final two UWF points for the 1-0 lead.

Union only managed to outhit the hosts in the second frame, hitting 0.206 with only five errors while holding the latter to 0.0 despite 10 hits. The Argos made it only a temporary setback as they came up with five of the first seven points of the third set with two Rodgers kills following one each from Jacque Martin and Lily Sumner. The teams mostly traded points from there as the UWF defense bent but never broke. When Union pulled to within one at 20-19, Damyah Joyner sent a ball to the floor to build back the cushion ahead of a Bulldog error. The last three kills of the frame went to Martin, Emily Breazeale and Rodgers.

It was at this point that the Argonauts began pouring points on at will and didn't relent until they reached 25. The team tallied 16 kills while holding the Lady Bulldogs to just four in the final frame. Martin tallied a kill and an ace to open the scoring in the fourth and, in response to a Union score, Sumner and Rodgers killed balls set by Izabelle Sanchez to sandwich a block by Breazeale and Zydlo. Leading 14-6, Martin came up big with three more kills in a 6-0 run that put her team up by 14. Rodgers and Breazeale also had kills here, and Rodgers split a block with Sumner. After the teams exchanged points once more, a service error put it back in the hands of the Argos. Joyner sent one to the deck off a Gabi Moulton assist, and Moulton in turn fired an ace to finish off the dub.

Martin registered seven kills on 12 attacks for a .583 hitting percentage, a season high for the redshirt junior outside, while also scooping eight Union attacks. Rodgers racked up 13 kills as part of a .385 outing. Zydlo also connected on seven attacks along with her seven block assists and two aces. Meg Brackhan had 13 digs, nine assists and two aces. Breazeale added six kills in her most extensive action of her freshman campaign; Joyner had six as well. The setting of Moulton and Sanchez produced 21 and 16 assists, respectively.

UWF plays its next home contest tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Christian Brothers for Youth Team Day sponsored by Patriot Nutrition. Fans can receive autographs from the team after the game in the lobby of the Field House.
