LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
Claire Sutherland-Case had a career-high 18 points and posted her second double-double of the year as the UWF women's basketball team muscled past West Alabama, 52-46, at Pruitt Hall on Thursday.
Sutherland-Case finished with 10 rebounds and made 7-of-7 free throws as the Argonauts were 14-of-20 at the line.
Brooke Kane had nine points and
Jaden Langford had all eight of her points in the second half.
UWF (9-5, 6-4 Gulf South) shot just 36 percent in the game but was 5-of-10 in the fourth quarter where it outscored UWA 16-12. The Argos controlled the lane with 32 points in the paint and a 45-32 rebounding edge.
Neither team did much offensively in the first 12 minutes. Then the Tigers took an 18-11 lead on a 7-0 run. After trading baskets, the Argos closed the final 2:08 with a 9-0 run to take a 22-20 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, UWF never led by more than four and UWA tied it twice. Kane gave UWF a 36-34 lead with a layup to end the frame.
After a pair of UWA free throws, UWF used a 7-0 stretch to regain the momentum at 43-36. The Tigers pulled within two with 2:14 to play but the Argos responded with an 8-1 run to keep the margin at a multiple-possession difference.
Kamille Clark led UWA (4-11, 3-8) with 14 points.
UWF improved to 7-2 in its last nine games at Pruitt Hall.
UWF will continue its Alabama tour on Saturday when it heads to Huntsville to face Alabama Huntsville (6-8, 5-6) at 2 p.m. in Spragins Hall.
