UWF Falls To Lee, 58-55

Claire Sutherland-Case posted her third-consecutive career-high scoring effort

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team suffered a 58-55 loss to Lee at the UWF Field House on Thursday.
 
Mallory Hampton scored Lee's final eight points as the Lady Flames outscored the Argonauts 8-2 in the last 2:45. Hampton's final basket came with 4.1 seconds left to put Lee up by three. UWF was unable to get a shot off before the final horn.
 
UWF (10-6, 7-6 Gulf South) was led by Claire Sutherland-Case who posted career-highs of 19 points and seven blocked shots, tying for the seventh-most swats in a game in UWF history. It was her third-consecutive game posting a career-high in scoring.
 
Brooke Kane added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. 
 
The Argos shot 41 percent.
 
Lee (11-6, 9-4) got 30 points from Hampton as the only Lady Flame with more than six. The Argos held the visitors to 34 percent shooting – their third lowest effort this season. Lee scored 26 points off 19 UWF turnovers.
 
The Lady Flames made five 3-pointers in the opening quarter to stake a 19-9 lead. UWF stayed close with some layups late in the period from Sutherland-Case and Moriah Taylor.
 
UWF benefitted from 10 trips to the free throw line in the second quarter, making eight while cutting the margin to 28-25 at the intermission.
 
UWF closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 39-38, setting up a wild final 10 minutes.
 
UWF grabbed its first lead of the game with just under 4:00 to play following an 8-0 run that saw six points from Sutherland-Case and a pair from Kane. Hampton tied it at 50 with a 3-point play before Sutherland-Case drained a triple with 3:00 remaining, putting the Argos up 53-50.
 
Hampton made four free throws on consecutive possessions to put the Lade Flames back up. She then beat the shot clock with a layup high off the glass for a 56-53 edge. Delaney Trushel made a backdoor, reverse layup to pull the Argos within in 56-55 with 34 tics left, setting up Hampton's late bucket.
 
The Argos will play host to Shorter (1-16, 0-13) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
