PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida had reason to celebrate on Friday night as the team honored their seniors and went on to defeat Valdosta State, 3-0.
Prior to the match the team's 13 seniors were joined by family and teammates to honor their commitment to the university and soccer program. Those seniors included,
Maciah Lipsey,
Makayla Parkes,
Kendall Blackmon,
Gabriel Clarke,
Emma Beltz,
Emilie Dueck Doerkesen,
Alyssa Wilson,
Isabela Labovic,
Lauren Ragazzone,
Kaytlyn Larsen,
Ahnalie Layman,
Elexia Nelson, and
Sydney Garth.
"The seniors were able to lead us, and they've led us for this last year and a half," said head coach
Joe Bartlinski. "I'm just excited about the leadership we have. Not just the people who wear the captain's armband but all the upperclassmen. The buy in they have in the club and the university has been invaluable. It makes my job easier. Once you have a team that holds each other accountable and I don't have to, you're in a good place."
UWF had three different goal scorers in the game. Labovic got the scoring started in the 22nd minute with her first goal of the season. Eight minutes later, Nelson found the back of the net off the assist from
Ahnalie Layman and Labovic. It was also Nelson's first goal of the season.
Jillian Thompson scored early in the second half off another assist from Layman to give the Argos a 3-0 lead.
"We don't have just a single goal scorer," Bartlinski said. "That's what makes a team dangerous. Now we do have some special players. Quite a few of them. But we aren't relying on one or two people to get the goals."
UWF had 12 shots on goal compared to just one from the Blazers.
West Florida (7-1-2, 5-0-1 GSC) will host Auburn Montgomery on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
