PENSACOLA, Fla - The University of West Florida men's soccer team defeated GSC and #11 ranked opponent Auburn Montgomery on Sunday evening 2-1 at home. The Warhawks and Argos battled the entire 90 minutes, but the Argos came out on top after
Mar Aegisson and
Keegan Ancelin would answer the call.Â
How It Happened
The game was full of high stakes. The #11 Warhawks had not dropped a game this year, and the defending GSC Champions UWF were looking to become that upset on the day. The game started strong as both teams moved the ball well throughout the match. Strong defensive efforts from both sides of the pitch kept the score at 0-0 as the first 45 minutes concluded. The Argos outshot the Warhawks 5 to 4.
Heading into the second half, the Argos were looking for the moment they needed and got in. Reigning GSC defender of the week,
Mar Aegisson struck again. In his sweet spot, the Icelandic native found himself on the outside of the 18-yard box, where three of his now four goals have come from, and struck the ball to the opposite lower corner of the goal to put the Argos up 1-0 in the 54th minute. Aegisson's goal became the spark of power that the Argos needed. Thirty minutes later, senior
Keegan Ancelin, who is having an outstanding year finding the back of the net, found himself in the perfect spot once again. With the ball outside of the 18,
Kendrick Hernandez sent the ball into the box to Ancelin's foot, on the volley, and into the back of the net. Ancelin's goal is his now ninth of the season and helped put the Argos up 2-0. The Warhawks did not go done without a fight. Five minutes later, in the 88th minute, AUM answered with a late goal, leaving the Argos to defend with everything they had and the Warhawks to try and find one more fighting chance. After the final whistle blew, the Argos defeated the Warhawks 2-1 in the final.Â
