CLEVELAND, Tenn. - UWF (14-5, 9-0 GSC) put out the Flames of Lee (11-10, 5-4 GSC) 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18) at Paul Dana Walker Arena on Friday night in the first of five straight road matches.
Â
Jenna Zydlo tallied the first double-double of her career with 12 kills on a .250 hitting performance and 10 block assists. It marks the first double-digit block stat line and first double-double in kills and blocks for the program since Veresia Yon had 15 and 10, respectively, in 2021 against Gannon. The 10-block day places Zydlo in a 13-way tie for the fifth-most blocks in a match in UWF volleyball history.Â
Â
Emily Breazeale notched a double-double of her own in kills and digs, the fifth of her career, with 15 and 13, respectively, with a .294 offensive output.
Damyah Joyner made her most extended presence in over a month felt with 10 kills on just 15 swings for a .600 output.
Gabi Moulton tied her fourth-highest assist mark of the season with 48 to go with five blocks and seven digs.
Kumara Flanagain and
Magdalena Vongkasemsiri each scored six kills,
Caiden Largent earned five and
Annie Monaco three. Vongkasemsiri and Monaco each assisted three blocks.
Meg Brackhan and
Camryn Brooks each put up 17 digs and
Taylor Teaman added nine.

The Argos led in every category and outhit the Flames .232 to .109. Both teams got off to a slow start in the first set with UWF hitting an even .100 while forcing Lee to 0.0. The hosts got off to a pair of quick two-point leads before a 5-0 run ensured that would be the last lead of the frame with two errors, a Largent kill, a Brooks ace and a block split by Zydlo and Breazeale. Lee tied it at eight and 12 apiece but the Argos responded each time, the last one with another 5-0 span built off kills by Largent and Zydlo, a Teaman ace and a pair of split blocks by Zydlo and Moulton. Trailing 21-17, the Flames came back to tie it once more at 22, but another Largent kill and a pair of Lee attack errors made the opening frame go to the visitors.
Â
LU jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the next frame that would be diminished but not disintegrated as it tied the match 1-1 with set wins by identical scores. The third set followed a similar theme as Lee jumped out to a 3-1 lead but UWF responded to each push, starting with a 4-0 run with kills by Monaco and Breazeale and a pair of Zydlo blocks assisted by Joyner and Monaco.Â
Â
The teams went back and forth until the Flames made it 10-10. The next six points went to the Argos via four errors, three of them by Payton Danley, with a Breazeale kill preceding them and a Moulton ace wrapping up the 6-0 swing. After another back-and-forth stretch, with a 19-15 lead, UWF strung together another 6-0 run, a decisive one, with three hitting errors, kills from Breazeale and Moulton and a block by Zydlo and Moulton. The Argos forced the Flames into 11 errors and allowed just eight kills while tallying 12 kills to just four miscues to dominate the hitting battle .276 to -.086.
Â
The final set of this contest would not play out any other ways with a trade of runs. Joyner and Vongkasemsiri scored kills to open it before a service error and two kills from Carmen Perez, the second-place GSC player in aces. The squads traded points before Vongkasemsiri and Joyner registered kills and promptly split a block to give their team the 12-7 lead. After another back-and-forth span, Lee scored four straight to tie it up at 15-all, but Zydlo scored a kill and a block assist with Breazeale and another kill after a Lee kill to put her team ahead 18-16.Â
Â
The Flames pushed back and knotted things up one more time, which would be the last points scored by the hosts on the evening. In the closing 7-0 run, points 19 and 23 were scored by Breazeale. All the rest came from the right-handed beast that is Joyner to put the finishing touches on this one. All told, the Argos racked up 19 kills with just four errors to 12 kills for Lee to outhit the hosts .366 to .195.
