Argos Pull off Second Sweep of Blazers

UWF Rides Huge Runs in Second and Third Sets to Fifth Straight Road Victory

VALDOSTA, Ga. - West Florida volleyball (18-5, 13-0 GSC) cruised to its second 3-0 win (25-21, 25-10, 25-23) over Valdosta State (15-9, 9-5 GSC) at The Complex on Tuesday night with huge opening runs in the second and third sets and a stifling defense that held the Blazers under .100 hitting. The season sweep is the Argos' third this season and enables UWF to finish off their five-game road stretch undefeated.

UWF tallied 43 kills with 17 miscues for a .206 performance while allowing just 30 kills and forcing 23 errors for a .052 VSU output. It also racked up 78 digs to just 59 by the hosts and led in every category but blocks. Five Argonaut hitters reached the .200 percentage mark, while just two Blazers hit that benchmark and none reached double-digit kills.

Kumara Flanagain led the Blue and Green with 13 kills on .276 production. Emily Breazeale finished just behind her with 12 while scooping 17 Valdosta attacks for the sophomore's seventh double-double, along with a solo and assisted block. Jenna Zydlo scored seven kills on a .238 night while also registering one of each type of block. Annie Monaco contributed five kills and three digs while Magdalena Vongkasemsiri added four kills and two solo blocks. Gabi Moulton tallied 41 assists and four digs. Meg Brackhan racked up 29 digs, two shy of her career high of 31 last month against Northwest Missouri State. Camryn Brooks and Taylor Teaman put up 13 and 5 digs, respectively.

In a first set that saw 14 ties and nine lead changes, it was the Argos who would come out on top with a narrow hitting advantage of .184 to .113. The Blazers took an early 4-2 lead before UWF scored the next three, leading to runs and scores, and leads and ties as a result, being traded. After the Argos led 18-16, VSU would take the lead one last time with a kill and two solo blocks from Christina Pettigrew before Vongkasemsiri tied it back with a kill.

Breazeale then gave her team the lead for good with consecutive kills before responding to a Valdosta point with another for an impressive stretch of four kills in five points scored by her team. Brackhan tallied an ace to put her team up 23-20, and after an error, Zydlo and Breazeale added a kill each to send the match to the second period.

The following frame was complete and total domination as the Argos took the hitting battle .323 to -.135 and scored the first 12 points, seven of which came via Blazer hitting errors and only of which was due to a block. Brooks kicked things off with an ace, putting her behind the service line for the first 13 points. Flanagain scored two kills, Breazeale and Vongkasemsiri each had one and Breazeale came up with a solo block in the span.

After a 5-1 Valdosta run, the next four points went to the Argos as kills from Zydlo and Monaco bookended two more errors to stretch the lead to 18-6. Another 4-0 stretch with Breazeale and Vongkasemsiri kills and two miscues brought it to set point and Breazeale added one more kill to send it to the decisive third set.

The third would be a much tighter battle with just a .019 difference in hitting percentage, but another opening run would give UWF the upper hand. Vongkasemsiri opened it with a kill to put the ball back in Brooks's hands. Flanagain scored a kill and Brooks fired her second ace. Kills from Flanagain and Breazeale came between two Pettigrew errors to put the visitors ahead 7-0.

Trailing 11-3 following a Pettigrew service error and a Zydlo kill, the Blazers put the Argos on their toes with a 12-3 run to move ahead 15-14. Four lead changes would ensue as the teams volleyed points and runs back and forth, the last one resulting in a 21-20 VSU lead. Flanagain tied the game back with a kill. Izabelle Sanchez promptly subbed in to serve and tallied back-to-back aces to give her team a 23-21 lead. Largent made up for an error that made it a one-point difference with her lone kill of the day, coming at a crucial time for match point. Valdosta wasn't letting go easily with one last push to make it 24-23, but Flanagain once again came up big to finish off the sweep.

For their next match, the Argos are back at UWF Field House for the first time since October 12 on Friday, November 1 at 6 pm. The program's first annual Taylor Swift Night, UWF will take on Alabama Huntsville in a rematch from its 3-1 road win on October 5 that put it in the top spot in the GSC. This time around, the Chargers are the road team sitting in second place looking to unseat the top squad.
