AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team lost 72-71 to Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday night in what was a nail-biter last two minutes of the game.
The Argos fended off a double-digit deficit in both halves to give themselves a chance to win the game on the final possession but were unable to come up with a bucket as the Hurricanes snuck away with the win.
In the final 2:08 of the contest, the lead changed hands six times.
Zondrick Garrett gave UWF the lead 67-66 after a made free throw, but GSW responded with an offensive rebound and layup on their next possession to take the lead.
With 48 seconds remaining,
Xavier Glenn hit a driving layup to give the Argos a 71-70 lead. Glenn then came up with a steal on the defensive end which sent
Elijah Wyche to the free throw line. After missing the one-and-one free throw the Argos were called for a foul on the loose ball rebound. The Hurricanes' Matt Ansah drained both free throws with 12 seconds left in regulation to give GSW a 72-71 lead.
UWF turned the ball over on the final possession to win the game and the Hurricanes ran out the clock.
The Argos fought back from a 12-point deficit midway through the first half to cut the lead to just three points heading into halftime. UWF then climbed back from down 10 points early in the second half.
Leading the way for UWF was Wyche with 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists and
Shay Davis with 12 points.
Ja'Ron Briggs Jr. also added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Missed free throws became crucial down the stretch for the Argos. The team went 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the line.
UWF (1-2) will travel to Spring Hill on Thursday, Nov. 21 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
