PENSACOLA, Fla. - The newly ranked UWF volleyball team (24-5, 19-0 GSC) tallied its eighth consecutive sweep (25-18, 25-15, 25-12), barely breaking a sweat in finishing off its ninth season sweep of ten conference opponents with one regular season contest left to go, in taking down Lee (16-15, 10-9 GSC) to kick off Parents Weekend at UWF Field House Friday night.
Â
The No. 25 team in the nation, back in the national AVCA DII coaches poll for the first time since the second weekend of the season, and the No. 7 team in the first South Region rankings of the season dominated in a contest that saw some tight margins but was never in doubt. The Argos held Lee to 30 total points and doubled that output while almost doubling the kills count in taking it 47-25. The Flames were left flustered by the UWF serve, as the hosts tallied seven aces while allowing just two. UWF also finished with the advantage in blocks 6-3, assists 44-24 and digs 48-35. The Blue and Green won the hitting battle in each frame and took it outright .333 to .109.Â
Â
Leading the team in scoring,
Emily Breazeale did
Emily Breazeale things, tallying 12 kills on 28 swings for a .286 night with six digs.
Delaney Hanowell had her most productive day as an Argo, scoring on nine of her 14 attacks for a .571 output with three block assists on defense.
Jenna Zydlo scored eight kills, three block assists, four digs and an ace.
Kumara Flanagain hit .400 with five kills on 10 swings.
Gabi Moulton dished out 34 assists while scoring four kills herself on .429 hitting to go with two block assists, two digs and an ace.
Annie Monaco provided the second .571 stat line of the day for the Argos with four of seven swings finding the floor along with three scoops. The only higher hitting percentage of the day was
Damyah Joyner's .667 on her three attacks late in the match.
Â
On the back end,
Camryn Brooks led the squad with 10 digs while also firing four aces with another sizable service run.
Meg Brackhan was next with seven digs, four assists and an ace.
Taylor Teaman put up six scoops and two assists, and
Izabelle Sanchez added three of each.
Erin Thompson chipped in two digs in the late going as well.
Â
With one less kill and two fewer errors than the guests, the Argos took the first set while narrowly claiming the hitting battle .114 to .100. Despite 3-0 and 4-0 runs in the early rallies, Lee punched back to make the UWF lead 10-9. Four of the next six went to UWF, as Hanowell split consecutive blocks with Flanagain and
Caiden Largent. Largent added a kill ahead of a Lee error, and after giving up a kill, Hanowell scored one to get the point back ahead of Brackhan's ace. The Flames then pulled within three before Zydlo scored a kill and Brooks an ace, and after a Lee point, Zydlo scored another kill and an ace of her own. The teams traded points to end the set. Breazeale scored kills for 23 and 24 before Hanowell added one for the 1-0 match lead.
Â
In the second period, the Argos produced one of their finest offensive displays in a set all season. They scored on a whopping 20 of 24 attacks for a mind-blowing .833 frame, amazingly without a scoring run over four points, while holding Lee to .250. Flanagain, Zydlo and Breazeale scored kills in rapid succession off Moulton feeds for a quick advantage. After a trade of scores, Breazeale scored two kills, Moulton served an ace and Hanowell scored her first of three kills in as many UWF points as she responded to Lee points with the latter two. With a 14-9 lead, Monaco and Breazeale provided kills ahead of an error and a block by Moulton and Zydlo for the second 4-0 span. The Argos got two points back on a Breazeale kill and block between Hanowell and Monaco for a 22-13 lead. After another point trade, Flanagain got it to set point with a kill and a bad set put the Argos up 2-0.
Â
UWF methodically wore down the opposition after Lee took its first lead of the day in the third set, taking the hitting battle over the latter .233 to .026. The teams traded a few brief runs before Lee scored three straight to take a 6-5 lead, their second of the frame. That was the closest the Flames would get. Moulton promptly scored a kill to put Brooks behind the line, where she would stay for the next 10 rallies as part of an 11-0 scoring run.Â
Â
Brooks started and ended her time with the ball with an ace. Breazeale and Zydlo scored two kills apiece in the span and Moulton added another, while Lee committed three errors, one thanks to a block from Zydlo and Moulton. After the Flames scratched three points back, an additional kill from both Breazeale and Moulton made the score 18-9. Amid a trade of points, Hanowell scored the last kill of her huge night for point 19 and a bad set provided the 20th. An attack error gave Lee their last score of the night, as the last five points went to the Argos. Joyner scored the first two off assists from Sanchez and Thompson, Monaco contributed her final kill of the night and, after an attack error made it match point,
Nikki Deslatte called game with her lone kill of the contest.
Â
The Argos have one final match to play before hosting the GSC Championship for the 14th time. Gunning for an unblemished 20-0 GSC mark as well as their 10th GSC season sweep and 11th overall, they play host to Trevecca Nazarene tomorrow at 1 pm for Senior Day as the team honors the eight seniors playing their final regular season match in the Field House. Florida Blue is sponsoring a canned food drive for the occasion, and those who donate five cans receive free admission to the game.
