Argos Fall in Double OT to Georgia Southwestern

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team had multiple opportunities to put away the game on Saturday afternoon against Georgia Southwestern but were unable to close it out as the Hurricanes came away with a 100-95 win in double overtime.

UWF had GSW on the ropes after a 13-0 run early in the second half. The Argos built up a 16-point lead but watched the lead diminish late in regulation. Georgia Southwestern reclaimed the lead with 2:19 remaining, holding a 73-72 advantage.

Shay Davis, in his best offensive game of the season, answered with a three on the Argos' next possession. Elijah Wyche then split a pair of free throws to give UWF a three point lead. Lars Nilsen, who led GSW in scoring with 30 points made a layup to cut the lead to one and then hit one of his two free throws with three seconds left to tie the game at 76 and send it to overtime.

In the first overtime the Argos jumped out to the lead quickly and extended it to seven points with 39 seconds on the clock. But GSW used a 7-0 run to close out the first overtime period.

"We had the game won, we just made some mental errors down the stretch," said head coach Justin Mann in the FloSports broadcast postgame interview. "We had it won in the first overtime, we were up seven."

UWF was never able to capture the lead in the second overtime as Georgia Southwestern came away with the five-point victory.

Davis led the Argos with 22 points on 50-percent shooting. The senior hit four triples on the night. Elijah Wyche and Zondrick Garrett both had double doubles. Wyche scored 19 points to go along with 10 boards. The junior also had four assists and a block. Garrett had 10 points and 12 rebounds and two steals.

"We've got to get back to work and figure our team out and get back connected," Mann said.

UWF (1-5) have lost four straight and will head into Gulf South Conference play for the remainder of the season. The Argos will travel to West Alabama on Saturday, Dec. 7 for a 6 p.m. tip.
