UWF Wins South Region Title; Heads to NCAA National Quarterfinal

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Argos are the 2024 Division II Women's Soccer South Region Champions after defeating Montevallo on Sunday afternoon, 3-2.

UWF is among the eight teams remaining in the NCAA tournament and will head to the national quarterfinal on Saturday against Columbus State, who won the Southeast Region title.

A ten-minute stretch to open the second half was the deciding factor in Sunday's South Region Final. After a scoreless first half, five goals were scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half in a flurry of back-and-forth action. Emma Beltz scored the game's fifth goal and the game-winner for UWF in the 56th minute. Beltz collected a ball coming across the box that was flicked on by Emilie Dueck Doerkesen and drove a shot into the right side of the net to give the Argos a 3-2 advantage. It was her second goal of the contest.

Beltz and Doerkesen connected earlier in the game to open the scoring for UWF. Following a Montevallo goal just one minute into the half, Beltz answered with a goal in the 49th minute off the assist from Doerkesen.

The Argos then took a 2-1 lead when Mya Swinton found the back of the net for her 11th goal of the season.

The Falcons responded just under two minutes later to tie the game at 2-2 before Beltz found the winner just a few minutes later.

Argos goalkeeper Maciah Lipsey made four saves and came up big for the team in a couple of situations making timely, challenging saves.

UWF (17-1-3) will travel to Columbus, Ga. to take on Southeast Region No. 1 seed, Columbus State. The Argos and Lady Cougars have split four games each over the past eight matchups dating back to 2004.

Today's South Region win was the team's sixth regional title since the national championship run in 2012.
