HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Argonauts (5-3, 1-1 GSC) fell behind early at Spragins Hall on Monday night thanks to a hot-shooting first quarter by Alabama Huntsville (6-1, 3-0 GSC), the first-place team in the conference, and despite playing fairly neck-and-neck the rest of the way, couldn't make up ground in a 69-54 defeat.
When the first 10 minutes ended, UAH had tallied a 55% shooting percentage and an eye-popping 58.33% mark with seven treys on 12 attempts. For its part, UWF only made 33.3% of its shots in the quarter, the same mark it would hit in the second and third periods, and 28.57% of its threes, hitting two of seven attempts, as it would in the second and fourth quarters as well. The Argos could shoot no better than those clips the rest of the night. The Chargers led 31-14 at the end of the first quarter, and though the Argos clawed back to some extent, that difference was all the hosts needed to clinch a win.
After an early 9-0 UAH lead, UWF responded and made the scoring more back and forth. Consecutive UAH triples, the latter with 2:50 to go in the opening quarter, put the Chargers ahead 23-9, and they would lead by double digits the rest of the way.
UAH outshot the Argos 40.7% to 32.1% overall, 38.7% to 27.6% from deep and 90% to 71.4% from the charity stripe. It had a 10-point advantage in both points in the paint and points off turnovers and got 14 more points from its bench. UWF was outrebounded by three but scored three more second-chance points.
Delaney Trushel led the Argos with 18 points and nine rebounds, five on the offensive side, playing 36 of 40 minutes.
Haidyn Pitsch registered 11 points and three boards.
Bella Stone and
Remi Langmaid each scored five points and Stone also had four assists.
Kamille Clark had four points and two blocks.
Carmen Jones added six rebounds and four assists and
Izarria Alexander put up two more blocks.
UWF stays on the road for its next contest at Valdosta State on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 4 pm ET/3 pm CT before returning home for its final two games of 2024.
