PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF Men's Basketball Team completes their four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as they host Valdosta State at the UWF Field House. Tip-off is set for 4 PM.
It will be Argo Ambush, with the first 100 UWF students at the game receiving a free t-shirt.
West Florida comes into the match-up at 7-16 and 5-14 in Gulf South Conference play, with a 93-89 victory in their last contest against Delta State. The Argos are currently in 12
th place in the league standings, with the top eight teams earning a bid to the GSC Tournament. Montevallo is four games ahead in the league standings, with five games left to play.
Ankit Choudhary poured in a season-high 22 points on four made three-point field goals.
Tautvydas Kupstas recorded 15 points, while
Channick Nkoma and
Xavier Washington scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Sterling White III dished out 13 assists, the most by an Argo in over six seasons, and the most by a GSC player this season.
Overall, UWF is averaging 72.2 points per game on 42 percent shooting, while they are allowing opponents to score just over 78 points per game on 45 percent shooting. Washington leads the Argonauts in scoring at 13.1 points per contest, while the junior forward is third in the GSC in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game. White paces the Argonauts in both assists (95) and steals (23).
The 1,500 Point Club: By scoring 13 points in the contest against Christian Brothers last Saturday, Kupstas surpassed 1,500 points in his career at both Skidmore College and UWF. Tautvydas currently ranks 35
th among all Division II players in points scored, trailing only Malcolm Whitlow of Embry-Riddle and Ben Gahlert of Lynn for most career points by an active South Region player. Kupstas has scored at least 331 points in his first three seasons, all at Skidmore, with his 531 in his junior year, being his most.
Pushing The Pace: UWF has looked to push the tempo in 2023-24, with the Argonauts holding a 5-1 record when they score 80 or more points. That mark improves to 3-0 when they register 90 or more points, with the team tying their season-high of 93 the win against Auburn Montgomery.
Floor General: Sterling White III has been one of the top point guards in Division II this year, as the Virginia native currently leads the Division in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.31). White has had at least four games this season with seven or more assists, with his 13 in the victory over AUM were the most by a GSC player this season. Sterling is currently tied for seventh in the league with 4.1 assists per contest.
About Valdosta State: VSU is 9-14 on the season with a 6-13 mark in league play, in their 19
th season under coach Mike Helfer.
LaTrell Tate leads all scorers for the Blazers with 13.3 points per contest, spearheading a group that averages 76.3 points per game. Valdosta State has had a tough time defensively this season, with their 79.4 points per game allowed being the third worst mark in the league.
Forward, Lee Flenor, leads the conference in rebounds per contest with eight. Caden Boser, Braxton Williams and Flenor all average over 10 points per game scoring as well.
Series History: UWF is 12-33 against the Blazers, dating back to the 2001 season. The Argonauts are 2-3 in their last five but have won the last two meetings in Pensacola.
LaTrell Tate had 23 points to lead West Florida.
