MOBILE, Ala. --- The University of West Florida baseball team came out victorious in a non-conference, 8-4 win on the road.
Â
UWF (7-2) saw themselves in a two-run deficit through the sixth frame. With only two runs on the board, the Argos put up six straight runs in the final three innings to comeback for the win over the Badgers (5-6).
Â
Three of the Argos seven hits came in the seventh inning.
Trent Jeffcoat and
Darrien McDowell got two RBI each in the inning alone. With two outs on the board, Jeffcoat hit a perfectly placed double to left field that brought in
Preston Moore and
Jadon Fryman who reached base on a single and a walk. The play was immediately followed by a two-run homer from McDowell.
Â
Just two plays before, the Argos came in close scoring position.
Nick Sampogna pinch ran for
Tyler Dowdy who led off the inning with a walk. Sampogna showed his speed and quickly saw himself running home. Spring Hill managed to beat the runner and tag out Sampogna less than seconds. This play was the turning point for UWF.
Â
The Argos put up two more runs in the ninth inning off back-to-back doubles by outfielders,
Jadon Fryman and
Mark Townsend.
Â
"They have a lot of fight in them in the second half of the games," says head coach,
Mike Jeffcoat. "Guys kept grinding and we're finding ways to win. We have a lot to work on and we're looking forward to continuing to improve."
Â
Spring Hill got on the board early in the first and kept the lead through the opening frames. The Argos took the lead away from the Badgers in the fourth inning. UWF's first run came from a double by
Brett Rowell that sent an Argo runner from first to home. Rowell then scored the team's second run of the game by a ground out from Dowdy.
Â
"The four run, seven inning was huge. The way they responded was huge," Jeffcoat adds. "The guys just got to keep their confidence up."
Â
The game consisted of four lead changes. No team was up by more than two runs until the final three innings.
Â
Eight pitchers stepped on the mound for UWF.
Major Posey pitched the opening two innings. Posey and winning pitcher,
Dilan Lawson, led the team with two strikeouts apiece. Lawson is now 2-0 on the season.
Â
The Argos were outhit 10-7 but kept only four runners on base compared to Spring Hill's 11.
