PENSACOLA, Fla.
– UWF Softball (9-4) will open up league play with a ranked road series as the Argos head to Livingston, AL to take on No. 13 West Alabama (9-4).

UWF is 43-16 overall against West Alabama in series history, with a 41-16 conference record against the Tigers. Their last meeting was a 1-9 West Alabama win over the Argos in Pensacola back on April 23, 2023. Under head coach Ashliegh McLean, UWF is 13-3 against the Tigers dating back to her first year in 2019. McLean is also 3-2 in GSC opening series in her time as head coach of the Argos.

West Florida is coming off a dominant road trip in Georgia where the team went 5-1 over a four-day span in three different cities. Sophomore Emma Brice led the way with stellar performances against Valdosta State and Columbus State, earning the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week and the GSC Player of the Week.

UWF has relied on explosive batting to spurn many of its wins so far in 2024, as the Argos are fourth in the GSC in total runs with 82. Extra base hits have been a major catalyst, with the Argos leading the GSC in doubles (25). The team's .526 slugging percentage is also third best in the conference.

There is also massive improvement in home runs this season, as UWF only recorded two home runs in their first thirteen games last year and only 21 total. In 2024, UWF already has 19 home runs with six multi-home run games. In addition, the Argos have four batters averaging above .300 with multiple extra base hits, including Madelyn Vasquez, Emma Brice, Jessie Baughan, and Erin Moon.

Scouting No. 13 West Alabama

The Tigers were selected third in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll and currently sit at 1-2 in GSC action after dropping their opening series 1-2 to the Union Bulldogs. Despite the losses to Union, the Tigers have three impressive wins over ranked opponents including a 7-6 win over No. 15 Nova Southeastern, a 5-4 win over No. 20 Saint Leo, and most recently a 5-4 win over No. 3 Tampa on Feb. 10.

The Tigers are led by senior pitcher Madison Wright, who leads the GSC in innings pitched (48), is second in wins (5) and is third in strikeouts (38). She has also only walked six batters in her eight total appearances.

Marissa Mitchell is the Tigers' most prolific threat at the plate at this point in the season, as the junior leads UWA in runs (16) hits (18), RBIs (12) and average (.429). She is also tied with Emma Brice and multiple other players in DII softball with five home runs, good enough for sixth nationally.

Taylor Clegg and Ann Marie Stanbridge have also been productive at the plate for West Alabama, as both batters are in double digits in at least one major batting category and are near the top in batting and slugging average on the team.

The Tigers are led by head coach Stephanie Defeo who is in her third season with West Alabama. Defeo has compiled a 78-42 overall record since 2022 with a 39-24 mark in GSC play.
