Argos Fall On Late Game Runs

COLUMBUS, Ga. --- The University of West Florida baseball team took a 4-3 loss Wednesday afternoon at Columbus State.

Late runs were scored that put Argos in trailing position. The game was neck and neck but Argos could not surpass the Cougars defense. Each team tallied seven hits.

Brett Rowell gave UWF (9-5) the first lead of the game in the second inning.  Rowell sunk a two-run homer in his first pitch of the game. He sent Jadon Fryman home with him who led off the inning with a single.

Columbus State (9-7) tied the ball game at two-all with a two RBI homerun themselves.

The score remained at 2-2 heading into the eighth inning. Jackson Grabsky led off the inning with a walk and Fryman was intentionally walked. With two outs on the board, the Cougars had the option to throw to any base to get out the inning. Instead, this put UWF in closer scoring position.

Columbus State threw a wild pitch that allowed Grabsky to advance base. The Cougars catcher attempted to get Grabsky out at third but instead, threw the ball over the third baseman's head. This gave Grabsky the opportunity to jog his way home and retake the lead 3-2.

The Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom half to sit at a 4-3 score. Columbus State had runners on third and first. With two outs on the board, UWF strategized and intentionally walked Columbus State's best batter to have loaded bases. The Cougars got the perfect hit at the perfect time that brought two runs in and put the Argos behind.

A hit and a sacrifice bunt put an Argo runner on second in the top half of the ninth. The Cougars ended the game with a double play and gave UWF a one-run loss.

Jacob Health kept the Argos in the game through his seven inning performance. Heath recorded six strikeouts and allowed two runs on five hits.

The Argos will make their way back to Jim Spooner Field to take on Alabama Huntsville in a three-game conference series. The series will open with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1 and finish with a single game on Sunday, March 2. Both days will begin at 1:00 p.m.
