UWF Falls Just Short In 81-78 Loss To No. 3 Union

The Argonauts made 10 3-pointers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team went shot-for-shot with No. 3 Union on Thursday night before falling 81-78 at the UWF Field House.
 
UWF led four with 3:37 to play before Union scored the final seven points for the victory. The Argonauts had a shot to tie the game in the final seconds, but the contested 3-pointer was off the mark.
 
UWF (12-9, 9-8 Gulf South) shot 52 percent and was 10-of-26 from outside.
 
Claire Sutherland-Case led four Argos in double figures, scoring 19 points with three 3-pointers, three rebounds and two blocked shots. Delaney Trushel also had three triples on her way to 11 points, while Brooke Kane and Jaden Langford had 10 each.
 
Union (22-1, 16-1) extended its win streak to 12 games as the Lady Bulldogs made 14 3-pointers. Olivia Lee scored 17 and Courtney Zensen made five 3-pointers on her way to 16 points.
 
The Lady Bulldogs led 37-30 midway through the second quarter before the Argos mounted a rally. UWF rattled off nine-consecutive to go ahead 39-37 with 2:44 remaining. After trading baskets, Union took a 48-44 edge into the locker room after scoring the final five points.
 
In the fourth quarter, UWF used an 11-0 run to take a 78-74 lead with just under four minutes to play. Union regained the lead on a Macy Lee triple with 1:50 left. The Lady Bulldogs then went 2-for-4 at the free throw line down the stretch as UWF missed its last three field goals.
 
Union was 13-of-18 at the free throw line compared to just 2-of-4 for UWF. The point total was the third-lowest for the Lady Bulldogs this season. 

Thursday was the first of three games in five days for the Argos, who will play host to Christian Brothers (29-19, 2-15) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
The game will be UWF's recognition of National Girls and Women In Sports Day with a youth clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UWF HLS Building. It will also be the annual Play 4 Kay game.
