CLINTON, Miss. --- No. 8 West Florida grabbed a series win after taking a 6-3 victory in the series finale over Mississippi College. The Argos (14-6, 7-2 GSC) continue to stay at the top of the conference standings.
Â
Through the opening six frames, the Argos scored a run in every inning but the second.
Trent Jeffcoat opened the game with a double. His speed allowed him to make his way home by a
Jackson Grabsky RBI outfield single.
Â
UWF extended the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Grabsky got his second RBI of the day with another outfield single. The Argos offense continued to pounce and saw loaded bases on no outs. The Argos got hit with a double play in
Tyler Dowdy's at bat but UWF still drove a run in to bring the score to 3-0.
Grabsky's two RBI was a game-high for the team. He and Jeffcoat led with three hits. "Jeffcoat had a big weekend swinging the bat," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat.
Â
In just three at bats, the Argos brought in their fourth run in the fourth frame.
Brett Rowell led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Preston Moore. Cade Easterbook stepped up to the plate and easily brought in Rowell with a solid RBI double.
Â
Argos extended their lead by a run in the fourth inning off an MC error.
Â
Now at a 5-0 score heading into the sixth inning, UWF used the Choctaws (11-8, 4-5 GSC) defensive mistakes to their advantage. Mississippi College tallied two more errors in the sixth frame. This allowed the Argos to score an unearned run and extend the lead to 6-0.
Â
Jacob Heath kept the Choctaws scoreless through 6.2 innings. The Choctaws were able to score their lone run in the seventh inning and bring the score to 6-1.
Â
Mississippi College put up a pair of runs in the ninth inning to close the gap but the Argos finished with a three-run lead.
Â
Heath threw a complete game of nine frames and allowed just earned runs on six hits. He recorded six strikeouts. He allowed no hits through four consecutive frames and allowed no hits for the Choctaws for five total innings. "Heath went the distance," continued Jeffcoat. "[Heath]Â went out those first couple innings and the guys knew he had his stuff today. The rest of them needed to score to back him up and they did. We knew to continue to let him pitch and all he did was just give up two earned runs at the end."
"Overall, the starting pitchers were outstanding this weekend. Dalton did great job in his outing. Manderscheid did what he needed to do and Heath finished it off today."
