UWF Drops Close Match to Johns Hopkins

Argos Wrap Up Home Stand on Wednesday vs. Henderson State

PENSACOLA, Fla. - No. 12 UWF women's tennis (7-4, 4-1 GSC) won doubles and two key singles matches, but it wasn't enough against a game Johns Hopkins team (8-3, 2-0 Centennial Conference), which won 4-3 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon.

The Argos got off to a hot start against the D3 side and first-time opponent, as Jenna Svatos and Giuliana Sacco won 6-3 in the No. 1 pairing over Jay Xiao and Sophia Kim. Guadalupe Martinez and Aline Midori Da Silva suffered a rare setback 6-3 to Samantha Wang and Ashley Chang, but Luiza Daud and Carlota Verdu won 6-4 at No. 2 over Sydney Langer and Kamila Wong to claim the doubles point for their squad.

From there, the Blue Jays turned it on in singles, with Xiao getting it started by topping Manuela Dejean 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5. Wang won 6-2, 6-3 over Catharina Schoch before Kim took down Daud 7-5, 6-0, putting the visitors in the lead 3-1. Martinez scratched a point back at No. 3 in beating Langer 6-2, 7-5. Though Da Silva finished the day off with a win at No. 2 over Chang 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, the result was insufficient to claim a win as Verdu fell at No. 1 to Mary Beth Hurley 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 to seal the match for the Blue Jays.

UWF has one more home match before a three-match slate in Columbus, Ga., as it takes on Henderson State on Wednesday at 10 am.
