Argos head to Cleveland, Miss. for Saturday-Sunday series

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF Softball (17-12, 6-6) continues their 2024 campaign with a road series against the Delta State Statemen (7-24, 3-9) this weekend in Cleveland, Miss.

The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. CT at University Field and concludes with a Sunday single game at 12:00 p.m. CT.

The Argos are 33-12 over the Statesmen since 2006, with UWF owning a 12-game win streak that ended last year on a 5-6 Delta State win in Pensacola. UWF won the series 2-1 at home last year, and haven't dropped a series to the Statesmen since the 2014 series in Cleveland. UWF is 10-4 all-time against Delta on the road.

Argos look to continue record breaking season, conference momentum

Gianna Guerriero's solo home run in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader broke the single-season team home run record for the Argos at 52. Hannah Harper added another to extend the record to 53, but the Argos have 20 more regular season games and potentially more in the postseason to secure one of the most successful power hitting seasons UWF Softball has experienced.

Their 53 home runs are still second in the GSC and second nationally behind Valdosta State who leads both with 76. West Florida also continues to dominate in the doubles stat, with the Argos accounting for 66 so far. That total ranks fourth in DII softball, and their 2.28 doubles per game is third best nationally.

The Argos are coming off a sweep of Christian Brothers in which they run-ruled the Buccaneers in all three games by a 34-6 margin and improved their conference record back to .500. UWF now sits in the middle of the pack in the GSC at 6-6 with about half the season to go, and looks to carry this momentum into their upcoming conference series with Delta State.

Montana Young's Recent Success:

Senior pitcher Montana Young has dominated in her outings in recent weekends, only allowing one earned run and 13 total hits in her last 22 innings of pitching. The righty has only walked four batters and accumulated 23 strikeouts in that same time frame, shutting out three opponents in all of her last three starts. Her 3.90 season ERA and 10-4 record leads the Argos currently.

Her impressive play earned her an NFCA Selected Top Performance Honor this week along with fellow senior Madelyn Vasquez. It is the third straight week a UWF softball player has made the list.

Scouting Delta State:

The Statesmen have had some recent success after a difficult start to the 2024 season. DSU handled Shorter last week in a doubleheader and picked up a 2-1 series win over West Alabama for their first GSC series win this year. The Statesmen dropped both games in a midweek doubleheader against Southern Arkansas Tuesday, and now prepare for UWF.

Sydney Pevey has been one the main catalysts for the Statesmen offensively in 2024. The senior infielder leads DSU with 35 hits, nine doubles and 26 RBI this season. Her .615 slugging percentage is also a team-best. Kyleigh Wheaton is 14th in the GSC with a .421 batting average and a team leading 1.053 OPS. Mycala Helms has also launched a team leading six home runs and batted in a team-second 19 RBI.

Emma Enderud leads the Statesmen with a 4-4 record and 68 innings pitched. She also leads with 69 strikeouts and a 6.79 ERA on the year. Morgan Grubb (2-8) and Yazmin Jackson (0-5) are additional options for Delta State, with the duo having 59 and 33 innings of experience this season respectively. Altogether, the Statesmen's bullpen accounts for the fourth most strikeouts in the conference at 151 this year.
