COLUMBUS, Ga. - No. 17 UWF men's tennis (9-4, 4-1 GSC) polished off a fruitful day on the courts with a 6-1 win over Shorter (0-8, 0-7 GSC) Thursday afternoon in a makeup conference match at Walden Tennis Center on the campus of Columbus State.
Â
Diego Duran and
Albin Ekenros at No. 2 and
Bernardo Costa and
Joaquin Estevez at No. 3 each claimed 6-0 sweeps in doubles to give their team the 1-0 advantage.
Sebastian Rondon and
Sebastian Sotelo finished it on a high note with a 6-3 win over David Arrieta Gomez and Agustin Yap.
Â
The Hawks' lone point of the day came at the top of the singles lineup as
Bernardo Costa had to retire from his matchup with Gomez heading into the third set with a 6-2, 2-6 score. The other five matchups were all decided in two frames as UWF finished this match off in short order. Rondon and Sotelo each won 6-1, 6-2, and Duran took down Frederico Roman in a pair of 6-0 sets at the No. 5 position.
Mateo Martinez won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 as Ekenros inverted those scores in his No. 6 win over Mario Molina-Mari to seal the deal.
Â
The win is the Argos' 11th in as many meetings between the sides, as well as their seventh consecutive this season. Costa's retirement is just the second point ever allowed to Shorter by UWF. The other came in 2015 in an 8-1 win in Rome, Ga., and it was ceded by Warren Kuhn via retirement as well.Â
Â
The Blue and Green stay in Columbus for their next two matches on Friday and Saturday, as they take on two nationally ranked squads from the Peach Belt Conference, including host Columbus State. The Argos face off against the No. 7 Cougars tomorrow at 1 pm ET/12 pm CT.Â
