Argos Fall to Statesmen in 11 Innings, Drop Series 2-1

Darrien McDowell totals 24 career home runs - second most in school history

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- #14 Argos dropped their first GSC series of the season off a walk-off two-run homer by Delta State on the road.

In the 11th inning, the Argos and Statesmen were tied at four-all. Delta State hit a series-winning two RBI homer to take the win, 6-4.

Delta State got on the board early in the opening frame. The game sat at a 1-0 score until the sixth inning. Darrien McDowell led off the inning with a solo home run to put the team back at a tie game. McDowell went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the team. The home run was his 10th of the season and is one away from tying the homerun career record. The current record is 25 home runs, set by Cullan O'Shea (2020-22).

The Argos continued in the seventh inning with a pair of runs to take their first lead of the game. Two singles and an intentional walk got runners on base. Preston Moore got an RBI walk and Mark Townsend hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring the score to 3-1.

Delta State responded with a quick game-tying two RBI homer in the bottom half of the inning.

Now at 3-3, both teams went scoreless to go into extra innings.

Each team put up a run in the 10th inning off RBI outfield singles. The Argos put up a clutch defensive performance to prevent the game ending in 10 innings. At a 4-4 score, the Statesmen were able to load the bases. UWF recorded back-to-back-to-back outs, including a stop at home, to force an 11th inning.

Delta State finished with a two-run homer that sealed the deal.

The Argos prepare for a four-game week at home including a mid-week game against Spring Hill on Wednesday (March 27).
