Argos Split Twinbill with Hawks, Takes Series 2-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team split Saturday's twinbill at home to take the series 2-1.
 
UWF (21-11, 13-5 GSC) took a game one, 8-7 loss, but finished with a series finale win, 8-3.
 
In game one, UWF was down 7-3 heading into the eighth inning. The Argos made a 4-1 run in the final two innings to put themselves at a one-run deficit heading into the final inning. With loaded bases on two out, UWF scoring came to a close and the Argos fell a run short.
 
Mark Townsend put the Argos on the board first in the opening frame with a sacrifice fly. Trent Jeffcoat also hit a sacrifice fly to bring in UWF's second run in the fifth inning. The run tied the game at 2-2.
 
Shorter went on a 4-0 run in the seventh frame to bring their lead to 6-3.
 
The Argos found their groove in the final two innings to shorten the Hawks gap. Parker Tubb hit a two RBI single in the eighth. In the ninth inning, Jackson Grabsky hit an RBI ground out and Dean Hotz got an RBI on a walk to add a pair of runs but the scoring fell a run short.
 
It was an offensively dominant game as each team recorded 12 hits.
 
Jacob Heath started on the mound and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts.
 
In game two, UWF took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and held onto it through all seven frames. UWF put up three runs in the first inning with Darrien McDowell, Preston Moore and Brett Rowell earning RBIs.
 
At a 3-1 lead, Shorter put up a run in the third but the Argos responded with a run themselves to keep the game at a two-run gap.
 
Sitting at a 4-2 lead entering the fourth, the Argos scored a run in three consecutive innings. The Hawks were held to one run which was scored in the sixth inning on an RBI single.
 
Kade Mandersheid got the win on the mound to remain undefeated. He is now 7-0. He threw five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
 
Chase Wilkerson pitched the final inning and recorded two strikeouts. The reliever allowed no hits.

The Argos will head on the road for a mid-week non conference series before returning to The Spoon next weekend.
